Local volunteers, artists, and families gathered at Dyment Recreation Hall this Saturday to revitalize the community greenspace ahead of July 1 Canada Day celebrations.

BORUPS CORNERS, ON — Local residents, artists, and gardening enthusiasts traded their usual Saturday morning routines for dirt and shovels today, gathering at the Dyment Recreation Hall to launch a massive, collaborative community placemaking initiative.

The “Community Garden Gathering,” which kicked off at 10:00 a.m., saw community volunteers work side-by-side to revitalize the recreation complex’s park and greenspace. Organized as a living public art installation, the event brought together seasoned gardeners and local creative minds to completely transform the shared outdoor area.

The project was a team effort backed by the Local Services Board of Melgund Recreation Committee, community volunteers, and local non-profits Art Borups Corners and Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture. Together, they chipped in the tools, talent, and hands to get a new garden off the ground.

The morning’s efforts focused on planting a vibrant variety of colorful flowers and young apple trees throughout the grounds. Beyond beautifying the local park and event spaces, the revitalization serves a practical community purpose: preparing the town’s essential recreation hub for upcoming Canada Day holiday events.

“We wanted to turn our shared outdoor areas into a collaborative canvas,” organizers said ahead of the event. “This effort ensures our park and greenspace look spectacular, welcoming, and picture-perfect ahead of the big holiday celebrations.”

Melgund Township will host its popular annual Canada Day Festival on July 1 with artist and vendor marketplace, live musical events and food.
