On April 22, 2026 the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada will host an Open House information session on the NWMO Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project.
A community open house will take place on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Dyment Recreation Hall, offering residents a chance to learn more about the federal impact assessment process for the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project.
The Open House will feature presentations by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC), followed by a relaxed open-house period where attendees can explore information, ask questions, and speak directly with staff. The goal is to create a comfortable and informative environment for community members of all backgrounds.
This session comes at an important time, as the assessment process has entered a new phase following the recent decision to proceed with a review panel. Community input will be sought on how the assessment should be carried out and how people can participate effectively.
The upcoming draft Integrated Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines and the draft Public Participation Plan will be central to the discussion. These documents outline what will be studied and how the public can stay engaged throughout the life of the project.
Printed materials will be available at the event and will remain accessible locally after the session, helping ensure that everyone has the opportunity to review and reflect on the information.
Whether you have been following the project closely or are just starting to learn about it, this open house is a great opportunity to get informed and be part of the conversation.
All are welcome to attend.

About the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (the NWMO) is proposing a new underground deep geological repository system designed to safely contain and isolate used nuclear fuel. Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON) and the Township of Ignace have been selected as the host communities for the proposed project, which is located 21 kilometres southeast of the WLON and 43 kilometres northwest of the Town of Ignace, Ontario along Highway 17. As proposed, the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project would provide permanent storage for approximately 5.9 million bundles of used nuclear fuel. The project is expected to span approximately 160 years, encompassing site preparation, construction, operation and closure monitoring. The project assessment is being conducted in collaboration with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
