Melgund Community Workshop to Examine the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project

A community workshop in Dyment on Wednesday, October 28, will focus on the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project and the alternative project designs being assessed by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). Hosted by the Local Services Board of Melgund, the session will give community members an opportunity to hear about four Alternative Means Studies and provide feedback on the options under consideration.

The drop-in workshop runs from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dyment Community Hall, 13 Hogan Road. The session is part of NWMO’s regulatory engagement program and will focus primarily on facility layout, infrastructure connections, water management and the locations of supporting facilities within the proposed project site.

The Alternative Means Studies form part of the assessment process under the federal Impact Assessment Act. They examine different ways of carrying out a proposed project and help identify preferred options. The October 28 workshop is intended to increase community understanding of this process, identify which studies are of greatest interest to the Local Services Board of Melgund and surrounding communities, and gather input on the alternatives being considered.

Four studies will be presented for community feedback. The Utility Corridor and Alignment Options study will examine different routes for utility and transportation access corridors connecting the project site to existing infrastructure. The Water Source and Discharge Options study will assess alternative locations for water intake and discharge, along with related water management approaches.

The Accommodation Camp Options study will examine potential locations for the project’s accommodation camp within the proposed site footprint. The Waste Management study will assess possible locations for the Excavated Rock Management Area and Organics Management Area. These studies address how infrastructure, accommodation facilities and waste management areas could be arranged as part of the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project.

In addition to the four Alternative Means Studies, the workshop may also seek feedback on site decommissioning and end land use. These topics concern the eventual decommissioning of the project site and potential uses of the land at the end of the project’s operational life.

The workshop will begin with an introductory presentation on the studies, followed by interactive feedback activities. Community members will have the opportunity to review the topics, identify the studies that matter most to them and share their perspectives as part of the project’s regulatory engagement process.

The October 28 session provides an opportunity for residents of Melgund and surrounding communities to participate in discussions about project design, infrastructure planning and the longer-term considerations associated with the proposed DGR. The feedback sought at the workshop will focus on the four Alternative Means Studies, with possible additional discussion of decommissioning and future land use.

The Local Services Board of Melgund invites community members to attend the drop-in workshop on Wednesday, October 28, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dyment Community Hall, 13 Hogan Road, Dyment, Ontario.
