Community Members Learn More about Nuclear Waste in Northwestern Ontario.

It isn’t every day a giant high-tech classroom on wheels pulls into the Dyment Recreation Hall and Park, but when the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) Mobile Learn More Centre rolled into Melgund Township last Friday, it brought plenty to talk about—and plenty to taste. Running from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., the afternoon was part science exhibit, part neighbourhood block party, complete with sizzling hot dogs and burgers off the grill.

As the communities closest and most to be impacted by the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s used nuclear fuel, Melgund residents showed up ready to talk. The mobile unit’s touchscreens and detailed scale models gave residents an opportunity to see how the underground repository is designed to work, making complex engineering easier to understand.

More importantly, the event created space for direct conversation about the program. Neighbours brought their questions, shared their concerns and sat down with NWMO staff to discuss environmental protection, safety measures and long-term plans.

The federal government recently took another step toward designating the Deep Geological Repository as a Project of National Interest under the Building Canada Act. On September 18, 2026, a notice was published in the Canada Gazette, opening a public comment period that runs until October 26. The proposed listing remains under consideration following the project’s referral to the Major Projects Office on June 24.

The proposed designation would place the DGR within a federal framework focused on national infrastructure, energy security and economic competitiveness. For Northwestern Ontario, this adds another layer of federal decision-making to a project with significant regional implications. It also reinforces the importance of community capacity to document and assess social, economic, environmental and cultural impacts as the project moves through successive stages of federal consideration.

The government is accepting public comments by email. Anyone wishing to express a view on the proposed designation, for or against, are encouraged to send comments to the Major Projects Office at DGRComment-CommentaireDSCGP@mpo-bgp.gc.ca before the end of the day on October 26, 2026.

Special thanks go out to the NWMO for supporting such an approachable, informative day of community engagement. To dive deeper into the DGR project or check out assessment details, visit the NWMO website at nwmo.ca or check out the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.
