Vibrant red flowers will soon decorate our land while thousands of other seeds finish their winter nap.
The Milkweed Takeover
Look who decided to join the party! We’ve got Blood Flower Milkweed officially poking its tiny green heads out of the dirt, and honestly, we’re obsessed.
While most of our “Milkweed to Market” project is currently chilling—literally—in the fridge for cold stratification, these early birds are living the high life indoors.
Mother Nature seems to have hit the snooze button this year; we’re a few days behind last season thanks to a stubborn frost. But we aren’t letting a little chill kill our vibe. We’re playing plant-parents to these indoor trays until the weather decides to play nice, ensuring they’re strong and sturdy before they hit the Land Lab soil.
Why Blood Flower is the MVP of the Season
So, why are we prioritizing these beauties? Well, patience is a virtue, but color is a necessity! Most of the thousands of native milkweed seeds we’re prepping are “slow and steady” types—they might take a year or two to really find their footing and look like the lush habitat we’re dreaming of.
Blood Flower Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) is our shortcut to a stunning garden. It grows fast and hits the ground running with vibrant, fiery red and yellow clusters. While we wait for our massive restoration project to mature, these flowers provide an immediate pop of color and a tasty snack for passing pollinators.
It is important to remember that these Blood Flower beauties are the “live fast, die young” members of our garden family. Because they are a tropical variety, they’ll put on a spectacular show all summer long before bowing out gracefully with the first fall frost. Think of them as our dazzling opening act; while they’re busy blooming their hearts out, our native milkweed varieties will be working hard underground, quietly establishing the deep, rugged root systems they need to come back stronger year after year. It’s the perfect partnership of instant gratification and long-term sustainability!
The Milkweed to Market Master Plan
This isn’t just about pretty petals, though. These seedlings are the vanguard for our Milkweed to Market project. While these few trays are soaking up the indoor light, we have thousands more seeds currently undergoing their winter “nap” in the fridge.
Once the frost clears and the ground warms up, our Land Lab is going to be a buzzing hive of activity. We’re building something big here—a sustainable, seed-to-market cycle that supports local ecology while proving that conservation can be both beautiful and functional. Stay tuned, because things are about to get very green (and very red) around here!
