How we build sustainable foundations for the creators and organizations that define our community.

The People Behind the Art

When we walk through a local gallery or attend a neighborhood theater performance, we often focus on the work itself. We see the colors on the wall and hear the voices on the stage. But behind every creative act is a group of people working to keep the lights on and the doors open. We know that these individuals are often the most dedicated members of our community, but they are also frequently stretched too thin. For a small arts organization to thrive, its leaders need more than just a creative vision. They need a solid foundation of professional skills that allow them to manage their resources effectively. We are here to provide those tools, ensuring that the people who make our community vibrant have the support they need to stay in the work for the long haul.

Supporting Stability to Prevent Burnout

We see it far too often: talented directors and organizers who spend more time worrying about their bank balance than their mission. This constant stress is a recipe for burnout and high turnover. We believe that stability is a requirement for a healthy cultural sector. When an organization has clear financial systems and a strong board of directors, the leadership can breathe. This peace of mind is what allows for true innovation. We are committed to helping you build a professional structure that protects your time and your energy. By focusing on the health of the organization, we protect the art itself.

The Role of Our Leadership Mentorship

To address these needs directly, we offer our Leadership Mentorship. This service is designed for emerging leaders and small collectives who want to move beyond daily survival. We pair you with experienced professionals who understand the specific challenges of running a non-profit in the arts. This is not a series of lectures; it is a practical partnership. We work alongside you to solve the problems that keep you up at night, from managing a budget to building a diverse and active board.

In our Leadership Mentorship, we focus on several key areas that are essential for growth:

Financial Literacy and Accountability

Many arts leaders come from a creative background and may not have formal training in accounting. We help you bridge that gap. We provide training on how to read financial statements, manage cash flow, and prepare for audits. This is about more than just numbers; it is about accountability. When you have a clear picture of your finances, you can make informed decisions about your future. You can show donors exactly where their money is going, which builds the trust necessary for larger, multi-year gifts.

Board Development and Governance

A strong board is an organization’s greatest asset. We help you recruit board members who bring diverse skills to the table, including expertise in law, finance, and community engagement. We provide frameworks for better board meetings and clearer communication between the staff and the directors. A well-functioning board provides the oversight and the external connections that a small organization needs to expand its reach.

Strategic Planning for the Future

We help you look beyond the next performance or exhibition. Together, we develop a plan for the next three to five years. This includes setting clear goals for programming, fundraising, and community involvement. Having a written plan ensures that everyone in the organization is moving in the same direction. It provides a roadmap that helps you say no to distractions and yes to the opportunities that align with your mission.

Building Trust with Our Stakeholders

Our donors and community partners are part of this work. They want to see that their investments are being used wisely and that the organizations they love will be around for years to come. By participating in our Leadership Mentorship, you are showing your stakeholders that you are committed to professional excellence. You are demonstrating that your organization is a reliable partner. This commitment to growth is what attracts new supporters and deepens existing relationships.

We believe that every creator deserves access to high-level professional support. Our goal is to create an environment where small organizations are not just surviving, but leading. When we strengthen the people at the top, we improve the experiences of the artists on the stage and the audience in the seats. It is a shared effort that benefits everyone in our community.

Join Us in This Work

If you are leading an arts organization and feel like you are doing it all alone, we want to hear from you. Administrator

The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg is a participatory arts collective and living lab, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It's a space where innovation and creativity thrive. It's latest iteration was launched in 2021 with funding and support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse. Today, working with students and faculty from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, we fuse traditional and participatory media arts with artificial intelligence, music, storytelling and community-driven, land-based artist residencies to cultivate new voices and bold ideas. Whether through collaborative projects or immersive experiences, our small but vibrant community supports creators to explore, experiment, and connect. Join us at the intersection of artistry, technology, culture and community—where every moment is a new opportunity to create.
