Assessing Community Assets for Arts & Recreation: A SWOT Overview
This document provides a strategic assessment of our community’s physical and social infrastructure, highlighting both our considerable assets and the opportunities for growth. We have a solid foundation of well-maintained facilities that, with a renewed vision and strategic planning, can become vibrant hubs for arts, culture, and recreation. By addressing key challenges, we can unlock the full potential of these spaces and build a more connected and resilient community.

Arts and Recreation Programming: A SWOT Analysis
Strengths: The township’s arts and recreation programming benefits from a strong physical infrastructure, including a new Pavilion, versatile event tents, and professional catering facilities. These assets are ready to support a wide range of community activities and provide a valuable foundation for future growth.
Weaknesses: The primary challenges include the underutilization of these physical assets, a need for more robust digital and social infrastructure, and a lack of structured programming. Addressing these areas will be key to moving forward and maximizing our potential.
Opportunities: We have a significant opportunity to leverage national frameworks for recreation, apply for targeted grant funding, and meet the community’s demand for more programming through strategic partnerships. This is a chance to grow and enhance our services for everyone.
Threats: The continued underutilization of our assets and a lack of investment in our digital and social infrastructure could hinder our progress. By proactively addressing these risks, we can build community trust and create a sustainable model for the future.
Online and Social Infrastructure

Bridging the Digital Divide for Our Two Communities
The Dyment and Borups Corners communities, while sharing a commitment to recreation and arts, have different starting points for their digital journeys. The Dyment community website, in need of a comprehensive update, highlights a key opportunity for growth. Its current state underscores the importance of investing in modern social and information management infrastructure to effectively communicate and engage with residents. This digital foundation is essential for supporting a vibrant, 21st-century community.
Meanwhile, the Art Borups Corners website is a fantastic example of what’s possible with modern digital tools. By embracing platforms that support online exhibitions, program administration, and advanced communication, they have created a dynamic hub for their community. Their success serves as a powerful inspiration for our shared goal of building a stronger online presence across both communities.
Our collective challenge is to ensure that both communities have the digital tools they need to thrive. By modernizing our web presence and investing in a robust digital infrastructure, we can enhance communication, streamline program management, and foster a more connected and engaged community for everyone. This effort will be a symbol of our commitment to progress and our shared vision for a digitally empowered future.

Art Borups Corners and The Arts Incubator Program: Digital Transformation and Capacity Building for Northern Arts and Recreation
The Arts Incubator, seeded with foundational support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse in 2022, is spearheading digital transformation in Northern arts and recreation through its initiatives at Art Borups Corners. With support from the OpenAI Researcher Access Program, they have developed innovative AI tools to empower artists, streamline administration, and enhance community arts and recreation operations. In 2025 the Art Borups Corners program was funded by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Program. These efforts, alongside a continuous platform modernization and skill-building programs, directly address the “digital disconnect” in northern communities by fostering digital arts and literacy, creative entrepreneurship, and organizational resilience. Their work aligns strongly with the Framework for Recreation in Canada, improving recreation capacity, addressing workforce shortages, and promoting youth leadership and inclusive participation through technology, ultimately serving as a blueprint for sustainable arts and recreation development in underserved regions.
Physical Infrastructure for Arts and Community Recreation

Recreation Hall – Upper Level
The upper level of our Recreation Hall is a fantastic space with significant physical amenities, including recreational tables and a professional kitchen. We have an opportunity to move beyond its current sporadic use for meetings and annual events. By focusing on programming, we can transform this area into a vibrant community hub. Our commitment to modernizing our digital infrastructure will be key to a successful strategy, allowing us to better communicate with our community, mobilize volunteers, and create structured, engaging activities that align with national standards for recreation and community well-being.

Recreation Hall – Lower Level
After being beautifully restored following the June 2022 flood, the lower level of the Recreation Hall is a pristine asset ready for a new purpose. While it is currently awaiting activation, its potential is immense. We are focused on a path forward that includes investing in furniture, equipment, and developing a clear program vision. By improving our digital and administrative infrastructure, we can mobilize volunteers and community members to create a vibrant, sustainable hub for arts, culture, and active living. This space will be a testament to our resilience and a symbol of our shared vision for the future.

Administration Office (Lower Level)
The community administration office, recently remediated after the 2022 flood, is a clean slate ready for transformation. We are committed to modernizing this space by investing in a robust digital infrastructure, including computers and a reliable network. This will enable us to move beyond ad-hoc administrative practices and create a professional, welcoming hub that supports our volunteers and programs. This new chapter will be defined by a renewed commitment to strategic planning, effective communication, and fostering a strong sense of community pride and purpose.

The Old Games Building
The “Old Games Room” is a valuable asset with a rich history, and we see its current use as a storage area as a temporary state. We have an opportunity to reclaim this space and give it a new life for the community. While the building is for the most part structurally sound, our focus is on clearing out the space and working together to find a new purpose for it. By thinking strategically, we can transform this building from a storage area into a vibrant hub that once again serves the community, creating new memories and opportunities for everyone.

The CookShack
The Cookshack is a highly valuable and professionally equipped asset for our community. With its stainless steel tables, deep fryer, large grill, and refrigerator, it is designed to enhance our major events like Canada Day and Family Day. While it is used on a seasonal basis, its contribution to the quality of our events is significant. This asset is a crucial investment that greatly increases our capacity to host vibrant, well-supported community events, and we are committed to using it to create memorable experiences for our residents.

The Pavilion
The newly constructed Pavilion is a critical and highly anticipated enhancement to our community’s recreational and cultural landscape. Completed in time for our July 1st events, this new asset is a visible sign of progress and investment. The Pavilion significantly expands our potential for outdoor activities, including meetings, picnics, and arts initiatives. Its direct connection to the Cookshack further enhances its functionality, promising a seamless experience for a wide array of community events. We are excited about the many new possibilities this space brings.

Outdoor Event Space
Our Outdoor Event Space is a valuable asset, featuring highly functional and easy-to-use large event tents and an outdoor performance area. This space provides a fantastic setting for community recreation, arts, and cultural life, significantly enhancing our ability to host vibrant summer programming.
While this space has been a success during seasonal highlights, we have an opportunity to make it an even more consistent and indispensable part of our community. By focusing on strategic planning, we can address challenges and ensure this valuable area is used to its full potential.
By improving our digital infrastructure and developing proactive plans, we can unlock the full promise of this space. Our goal is to transform our Outdoor Event Space from a seasonal highlight into a year-round cornerstone of community engagement and well-being.
