Short Stories Today: Action-Adventure, Contemporary Fiction, Cyberpunk, and Coming-of-Age

Experience high-octane action and poignant coming-of-age moments in these unfinished narrative sketches and cyberpunk experiments.

Adrenaline and Evolution

Some stories are best experienced in motion. These unfinished tales capture characters in moments of transition and high activity, from physical Action-Adventure sequences to the internal shifts of Coming-of-Age dramas. By presenting these narratives as incomplete fragments, we focus the lens on the process of change itself, rather than the final destination.

This initiative stands at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. We use this platform to explore how digital tools can act as partners in the writing process, assisting in the development of pacing and character arcs. It is a study in enhancing digital literacy skills and modernizing creative workflows through technological collaboration.

Today’s post offers a dynamic mix of genres. We move from the grit of Cyberpunk and Action-Adventure to the emotional resonance of Contemporary Fiction and Coming-of-Age stories. This collection showcases the versatility of author Jamie F. Bell.

We encourage you to engage with these stories not as a passive consumer, but as a creative partner. The path forward for these characters is not written. It is up to you to decide whether they succeed in their mission or how they mature into their new selves. Complete the journey in your own mind.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

This project merges action-adventure and cyberpunk energy with the grounded nature of contemporary fiction and slice of life to explore the horizon of creative technology. As we investigate the future of publishing, our focus remains on AI-assisted narrative techniques applied to mythological retelling, dark comedy, and Boys Love (BL). Through these eclectic short stories, we aim to cultivate digital literacy, providing insight into how journalistic and coming-of-age frameworks are being transformed by new digital tools.

A senior woman brushes mud from an ancient, geometric flagstone on a riverbank.

The Prairie’s Breath

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Mythological Retelling | Genre: Action-Adventure

The humid summer air, thick with the scent of river mud and blossoming prairie grasses, clung to Elaine like a damp wool blanket. Her cotton shirt was already clinging, a testament to the early afternoon’s relentless sun beating down on the Red River banks. She pushed a stray wisp of silver hair from her brow, the effort barely registering as she squinted at the tangle of roots ahead. The path, barely more than an animal trail, narrowed drastically, vanishing into a dense thicket just beyond the old rail bridge. Most people turned back here, opting for the paved promenades, but Elaine found herself drawn to the wilder margins, to where the city’s manicured edges frayed into something older, less tamed.

The Tyranny of Tyndall Stone

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Slice of Life | Genre: Contemporary Fiction

It’s not the heat that gets you, it’s the history. That’s what I’m thinking, anyway. Every brick in this part of Winnipeg feels like it’s been baking since 1912, soaking up a century of summer afternoons and radiating it back at us. It’s a physical weight. Leaf, of course, seems immune, her beat-up Blundstones practically skipping over the cracked pavement of the alley.

Four teenagers and a professor in a dark, grimy cyberpunk classroom, looking fearful as a steel door rattles from an unseen force outside. A sculpture made of old circuit boards is in the background.

Charcoal Dreams

Category: Dark Comedy | Genre: Cyberpunk

A group of cynical teenagers are in a dilapidated cyberpunk classroom with their eccentric professor, discussing the abstract concept of art in a technologically advanced, corporately controlled, and socially decaying city. Their academic discussion is suddenly interrupted by a violent corporate lockdown, hinting at a hidden secret.

The Unnaturally Clear Call

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Journalistic | Genre: Contemporary Fiction

A humid summer evening descends upon Northwestern Ontario, drawing a young filmmaker, Sidney, along a dusty gravel path toward a familiar community centre. The air is thick with the scent of pine and lake water, but an unsettlingly perfect sound hints at a new, technological presence even in the quiet wilderness.

A Trellis for the Unruly Vine

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Coming-of-Age

The community centre’s workshop smelled of sawdust, old paint, and the faint, lingering odour of decades of bingo nights. It was a cavern of organized chaos, filled with half-finished projects for the upcoming BayFest. In the centre of it all, looking like a skeletal whale beached on a sea of drop cloths, was the frame of the Historical Society’s float.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is part of an experimental, creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. Each chapter is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment focused on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, where researchers explore using AI to generate story ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs to enhance creative development; and Talent Development and Training, where the project studies the necessary skills for creative professionals to manage AI and immersive technologies in production, helping to inform future training curricula. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation research and innovation in Ontario.
