Melgund LSB Meeting Highlights – October 22, 2025
The Local Service Board of Melgund held its regular meeting on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at the community hall. Chairperson Pat Daignault called the meeting to order, with a strong turnout of community participants both in person and by phone.
NWMO Presentation on the Centre of Expertise
Guests from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO)—Chantelle Gascon, Kiran Fahran, Project Engineer, and Justin Wallbott, Real Estate for Ignace—provided an overview and conceptual drawings for the proposed Centre of Expertiseto be built in Ignace. The design is still being finalized, with an estimated 2032 start date for Deep Geological Repository (DGR) construction.
The presentation noted that both regional and international employment opportunities will be available as the project progresses. The Board agreed to host quarterly information sessions to keep residents informed.
Business Updates
- BBQ Purchase: A new BBQ has been purchased by Terri Bell from Home Hardware and will arrive next week.
- Deck and Window Replacement: The contractor will begin installing pilings as soon as the current job wraps up.
- Insurance Provider Update: Standard Insurance has officially changed its name to Brokerlink. Norm Eady will follow up with the company regarding hall monitoring devices once the transition is complete.
New Business
The snow plowing contract was awarded to Karen Daignault at a rate of $275 per call-out. A motion (By-Law 08-2025) was moved by Norm Eady and seconded by Sean Merritt to enter into the contract, pending a copy of valid insurance.
The Interim Tax Roll has been received, and the following community updates were shared:
- Games Night will begin Wednesday, November 5, 2025 (4–7 p.m.).
- The Christmas Dinner date will be set at the November meeting.
- Garbage Roster is now posted at the hall.
- Eavestroughs at the hall will be checked by Sean Merritt for cleaning needs.
A new Keurig coffee maker will also be purchased, as the old one has stopped working.
A planned power outage is scheduled for Friday, October 24, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Financial & Administrative Notes
Accounting firm Winter’s & Co. has provided two options for this year’s financial review—a full audit or a Review Engagement. The Board will decide which option to proceed with, and year-end documents will be delivered on Monday.
Hydro readings are to be called in to Hydro One between November 6 and 9 by Sean Merritt.
The Board reminds residents that community message boards are reserved for LSB postings. Anyone wishing to post information should contact a Board member for permission, space permitting.
Going forward, the minutes will no longer be read aloud during meetings. Instead, they will be posted on message boards and emailed to the community mailing list. Copies of the minutes and financial statements will still be available at each meeting for review.
