What Is AI? Understanding GPTs, Creativity, and Community Power

May 27 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Free

An accessible introduction to artificial intelligence, large language models, and how communities can use them creatively and ethically.

Hosted by the Art Borups Corners Living Lab, this introductory workshop explores what artificial intelligence actually is — beyond the hype, fear, and corporate marketing. Participants will learn how systems like GPTs work, what generative AI can and cannot do, and why these technologies are rapidly reshaping education, culture, media, and community organizing around the world.

Using plain language and real examples from northern and rural arts practice, the session introduces participants to AI-assisted writing, image generation, impact assessments, research support, and participatory storytelling. Rather than presenting AI as a replacement for artists or workers, the workshop focuses on how communities can use these tools to strengthen local knowledge, cultural expression, and organizational capacity.

We will also learn about outcomes from last year’s research that was supported by the OpenAI Researcher Access Program.

The workshop also opens critical conversations around ethics, bias, digital sovereignty, and data ownership — asking who controls AI systems, whose voices are represented, and how underserved communities can actively shape the future of technology instead of simply reacting to it.
