NWMO Centre of Expertise will be constructed in Ignace
The future is starting to take shape in Ignace! The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) recently gave the community a detailed look at the new plans for its international Centre of Expertise (COE). This isn’t just another building—it’s a massive investment and a stunning piece of modern architecture designed to put Ignace on the global map.

A 65,000 Square-Foot Landmark is Coming
The new, impressive facility will be a sprawling 65,000 square-foot structure constructed in nearby Ignace. Unlike the clinical renderings often associated with scientific projects, the conceptual designs revealed a facility that truly celebrates the unique beauty of Northwestern Ontario. The building’s design, which is being shaped with input from the region, is intended to reflect the local landscape, promising an architectural gem along the highway.
More Than Just Offices: The Heart of Research
The COE is set to be much more than an administrative building. It will be the nerve centre for global research and innovation right here in our backyard, offering multiple high-value benefits:
- Global Research Hub: The core function will be to host the NWMO’s offices and provide significant research and multi-purpose space. This means world-class scientists and experts will be working in Ignace, bringing new, long-term careers and economic activity to the region.
- A New Visitor Destination: The facility will house cutting-edge, interactive displays, allowing both locals and international visitors to learn about Canada’s plan for the safe management of used nuclear fuel.
- Community Space: The plans deliberately incorporate space for the community, including multi-purpose areas that can be used for local events, education, and social gatherings, ensuring the building is a shared resource for Ignace.

Things we’d like to see:
Drawing on the confirmed commitment by the NWMO to include enriching social services and foster a sense of community pride in the Centre of Expertise (COE), here are a few paragraphs that reflect the community’s desire for dedicated arts support:
Community members have been vocal in expressing their desire for the new Centre of Expertise to be more than just a scientific facility; they want it to be a true cultural hub for Ignace and the broader region. A top priority is ensuring the design includes designated, accessible areas for arts exhibitions. These spaces should be professionally equipped to handle both static displays and rotation installations, creating a vibrant, ever-changing gallery that celebrates the unique creative output of Northwestern Ontario.
The opportunity to host local and regional exhibition opportunities is seen as a key benefit of the COE. This is viewed as essential to advancing the “Community and Culture” pillar of the local vision for the project. By dedicating space to showcase the work of Indigenous artists, as well as local painters, photographers, and sculptors, the COE can become a powerful platform that connects the local community with the international visitors the facility is expected to attract, giving regional talent the exposure it deserves.
Beyond simple display space, community input highlights the need for the COE to actively support local arts programming. This means more than just hanging pieces on a wall; it involves creating partnerships that could facilitate workshops, artist-in-residence programs, and cultural events.
