Art Borups Corners

Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario

The project is grounded in a dynamic process of collaborative engagement and capacity building, utilizing arts-based research methodologies to ensure the work is both relevant and empowering. A key focus is Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), which positions young people as leaders in investigating their own economic realities and co-designing their futures. Through a series of co-design workshops, digital storytelling projects, and community forums, ECO-STAR North facilitates intergenerational knowledge transfer, connecting youth with Elders and established creators. This hands-on, community-led approach ensures the resulting toolkit is not an academic exercise, but a living, practical resource built by and for Northern innovators, strengthening a resilient and interconnected creative ecosystem.

Thomas’s Mismatched Magic

Thomas's mismatched socks spark questions. Can he silence doubt and embrace his unique magic, proving that true style comes from within?
The Arts Incubator August 31, 2025

Short Stories from The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and Art Borups Corners

Meet Thomas, a boy whose feet tell a colorful story! He loves wearing mismatched socks—a bright yellow polka dot on one foot, a green zigzag on the other—and his parents adore his unique style. But at school, the curious glances and quiet whispers from classmates make Thomas wonder if being different is worth the "tiny prickle" in his chest. He starts to tuck his vibrant socks away, caught in a tug-of-war between fitting in and embracing the special choices that make him, well, *him*. When his teacher announces a "Show and Tell About YOU," Thomas is faced with a big question: Will he choose to hide his true self, or will he find the courage to let his unique magic shine? This charming story gently explores the journey of self-discovery and the quiet bravery required to stand tall in your own shoes—even if they don't match. Join Thomas as he learns that true confidence isn't about blending in, but about celebrating the wonderful, mismatched parts of yourself. "Thomas's Mismatched Magic" is a heartwarming tale that reminds us all that our differences are what make us truly shine.

Supporting Storytelling and the Arts in Northwestern Ontario

This special interdisciplinary arts and capacity building program ran in the summer of 2025, supported by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program, The Arts Incubator Winnipeg Hub, Ottawa-based Global Dignity Canada, and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Creative Entrepreneurship Program. We extend heartfelt thanks to the Local Services Board of Melgund and the many community members, artists, and creators who made this program possible.

The Arts Incubator is a participatory arts collective and living lab, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It's a space where innovation and creativity thrive. It's latest iteration was launched in 2021 with funding and support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse. Today, working with students and faculty from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, we fuse traditional and participatory media arts with artificial intelligence, music, storytelling and community-driven, land-based artist residencies to cultivate new voices and bold ideas. Whether through collaborative projects or immersive experiences, our small but vibrant community supports creators to explore, experiment, and connect. Join us at the intersection of artistry, technology, culture and community—where every moment is a new opportunity to create.
