Stories Today: Psychological Sci-Fi Meets Dark Comedy

Minds Unraveling, Futures Unfolding

This collection presents a series of unfinished tales, each a window into a story without a definitive end. Readers encounter narrative glimpses that demand imaginative engagement, inviting them to consider the broader arcs that these specific moments imply, rather than explicitly state.

This project functions as an experimental program exploring the dynamic between human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It aims to understand how digital tools can partner in the writing process, leading to new methods of storytelling and improved digital literacy.

This selection features a thought-provoking mix of genres, from the depths of Psychological Sci-Fi to the biting humor of Dark Comedy, infused with Contemporary Fiction, Western Style Boys Love, and a touch of Mystery. All of these stories are from author Jamie F. Bell.

Engage with these narratives not as fixed texts, but as living ideas. Your creative input is key to completing these unfinished tales, to imagining the full spectrum of their character journeys and underlying themes.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

Two young men are tangled together laughing on a kitchen floor covered in spilled salt.

A Liturgy for Small Corrosions

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Contemporary Fiction

The Tuesday morning air in the kitchen was thick with the smell of damp tea towels and Finn’s burnt toast. Rain slicked the windowpane, blurring the grey stone of the tenement across the lane. Liam, needing coffee with a desperation that felt primal, found his path to the kettle blocked by his flatmate, who was standing guard over the cutlery drawer with the solemnity of a tomb sentinel.

A young woman sits in a dry grass field at sunset, arranging stones in a complex pattern.

Parallax Approaches the Asymptote

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Time Travel Paradox | Genre: Psychological Sci-Fi

Sasha found Maxine in the north field, where the grass had been baked a pale straw-yellow by the relentless August sun. She wasn’t wandering, or crying, or doing any of the things Sasha had rehearsed comforting on the walk over. She was sitting, legs folded, in the centre of a vast, intricate pattern of stones. It wasn’t a spiral or a circle, but something that seemed to violate the very ground it rested on, its lines appearing to curve into impossible dimensions. Maxine was perfectly still, a small, calm island in a sea of geometric madness.

An open, decaying wooden crate in a dusty, dimly lit basement, containing a cracked doll's head, a rusty surgical tool, and old, yellowed letters tied with a faded ribbon.

The Chill of the Civic

Category: Gothic | Genre: Dark Comedy

Four teenagers explore the decrepit, moldering basement of their town’s old Civic Hall, once a bustling hub, now a forgotten monument to decay. Autumn’s chill seeps through broken windows, mingling with the stench of damp earth and forgotten paper. They are artists, reluctantly collaborating on a local history exhibit, and their artistic differences are as sharp as the chill in the air.

Simon and Jeff standing close together by a dying fire in a quarry at night.

Smoke Signals at the Quarry

Category: Coming-of-Age | Genre: Western Style Boys Love

Nighttime at an abandoned limestone quarry. The ground is slick with spring mud and oil. A large bonfire burns near the water’s edge, casting long, erratic shadows against the rock walls. The air smells of burning plastic, wet earth, and gasoline.

Three adult artists in a hot, dusty art studio examining old documents and blueprints, debating a local history exhibit with serious expressions.

A Canvas of Dust and Lies

Category: Hardboiled Noir | Genre: Mystery

In a sweltering, disused art studio during a sticky summer, three artists debate the theme for a local history exhibition, their artistic temperaments clashing as a darker undertone emerges from the town’s past.

Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation

AI-Assisted Scriptwriting: Our research deeply examines AI’s contributions to creative development, specifically through genres such as Contemporary Fiction, Psychological Sci-Fi, Dark Comedy, Western Style Boys Love, and Mystery. We are exploring how AI can help build believable contemporary settings, craft mind-bending psychological narratives for sci-fi, develop nuanced comedic timing for dark comedy, generate intriguing plot twists for mysteries, and foster compelling relationships in Boys Love (BL). This study advances our understanding of AI’s capability to address genre-specific challenges and significantly augment storytelling and scriptwriting.

Talent Development and Training: A significant part of our work addresses the emerging skills vital for creative professionals. The development of narratives across these distinct and challenging genres, from the cerebral plots of psychological sci-fi to the intricate clues of mystery, highlights the increasing importance of digital literacy and the strategic management of AI tools. These aptitudes are becoming indispensable for future digital publishing and film production workflows, enabling creators to leverage AI for character voice generation, plot refinement, and exploring narrative possibilities.

We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.
