Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario

The project is grounded in a dynamic process of collaborative engagement and capacity building, utilizing arts-based research methodologies to ensure the work is both relevant and empowering. A key focus is Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), which positions young people as leaders in investigating their own economic realities and co-designing their futures. Through a series of co-design workshops, digital storytelling projects, and community forums, ECO-STAR North facilitates intergenerational knowledge transfer, connecting youth with Elders and established creators. This hands-on, community-led approach ensures the resulting toolkit is not an academic exercise, but a living, practical resource built by and for Northern innovators, strengthening a resilient and interconnected creative ecosystem.

Finding Our Connection

That chill in the air? It’s officially a distant memory! Our incredible nature trails and Canadian parks are bursting with life, practically begging us to lace up our boots, hop on our bikes, or simply find a quiet spot to breathe it all in. What a fantastic feeling to see so many of us out there, reconnecting with the natural world!

It’s clearer than ever how vital our green spaces are. Over the past few years, we’ve truly leaned on our local parks and recreation trails as essential escapes for our mental and physical health. During the pandemic, Canadians embraced outdoor activities like never before, rediscovering the sheer joy of hiking in Canada, tranquil walks, and even creative pursuits like outdoor photography and learning about traditional plant identification. There’s something incredibly grounding about looking up at the canopy or just listening to the wind whisper through the leaves – a perfect moment for nature connection.

Take a moment to look up. The intricate beauty of the trees in our parks offers a wonderful escape and a refreshing dose of nature's artistry.

Connecting People With Nature

These aren’t just pretty places; they’re dynamic settings where community wellbeing thrives. The Canadian recreation and parks sector plays a huge role in boosting the health and resilience of our communities. In fact, one of the core goals of the “Framework for Recreation in Canada” is “Connecting People with Nature.” These spaces offer accessible ways to enjoy healthy living and build stronger bonds with both nature and each other.

And speaking of connection, did you know that June is Parks and Recreation Month in Canada? It’s the perfect time to celebrate these incredible assets!

This growing love for outdoor recreation is a golden opportunity. Continuing to invest in and care for our trail adventures and public parks, we can ensure everyone has the chance to get outside, find their peace, and truly experience the many public health benefits our outdoor spaces provide.

So, let’s keep exploring! Let’s keep those trails busy and those hiking paths well-trodden. Our community nature trails and park spaces are waiting to be enjoyed, enriching lives and strengthening communities, one outdoor moment at a time.
