The Frost’s Shadow

This story explores the universal value of 'Being innovative and resourceful'. In the Inuktitut language, this concept is known as 'Qanuqtuurniq'. This value means finding clever, practical ways to solve problems, especially when facing difficulties or when standard tools and methods are not available. It involves looking at what you have, thinking creatively, and adapting to new situations to achieve a goal. It is about using your mind and available materials to make things work.

We’re celebrating Halloween a little differently this year — with stories instead of sweets! 🎃 Since we can’t hand out candy through the Internet, we’re giving away The Frost’s Shadow for free on Smashwords until October 31. It’s our way of sharing a spooky, atmospheric read for the season — perfect for curling up with on a dark, chilly night. Grab your free copy while it lasts!

A Scary Halloween Story

The story of "The Frost's Shadow" offers a powerful, if chilling, look at how communities face extreme challenges, and how human ingenuity, even when leading to unexpected outcomes, is always at the heart of our efforts to survive and adapt. It highlights how our actions, especially in the face of environmental change, connect directly to these global objectives.

From The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and Art Borups Corners Storytelling Club comes The Frost’s Shadow, a gripping tale that asks: What happens when the modern world fails, and ancient fears awaken? When a powerful blizzard cuts off Saila’s Arctic village, plunging it into darkness, this resourceful teen must rely on forgotten traditions to bring back the light.

Her handmade seal-fat lamps are a beacon of hope, but their flickering glow accidentally awakens something ancient and hungry—a spirit tied to the melting land itself. Now, Saila must confront not only the brutal storm but also a terrifying entity that threatens to consume everything she holds dear. This chilling adventure explores themes of personal growth, resilience, and the delicate balance between humanity and nature, as Saila discovers her own courage and the enduring strength of her community.

Perfect for both home and classroom reading, The Frost’s Shadow includes a thoughtful discussion guide to encourage conversation about its important themes and connect its powerful message to global citizenship and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG #15: Life on Land.
