Rubber and frost meet, right here. Where have we been? Where are we going? That horizon... it's softer now, the light uncertain. Each mark on this tire, a story of the land. But the land is changing, breathing differently. I see it, we all do. This isn't just a view; it's the ground shifting beneath us, captured in a moment.

Tread Marks on Thinning Ice

A Tire’s Witness to a Changing North

This shot… it’s something I see more and more. This old tire, maybe from a snowmobile or a truck, sits here, and in the distance, that horizon isn’t always as solid as it used to be. That sunrise or sunset, as beautiful as it is, feels different now. It’s like the land itself is breathing differently. We travel these routes, our lives connected to them, and we see the melt, the changes happening right in front of us. It makes you think about what our footprint is, how everything is shifting.

This tire, it’s been places. It’s a part of how we move across this land. But looking out at that vastness, you realize how small we are, and how big these changes are. It’s not just the ice; it’s the animals, the way we hunt, everything feels like it’s on thinner ice. I wanted to capture that feeling of being right there, seeing it happen, this shift that affects all of us.

This isn’t just a pretty picture of the Arctic. It’s a look at what we’re living through. As Inuit youth, we’re seeing these changes firsthand, and it’s our story to tell. We’re connected to this land in a deep way, and this photo is my way of showing that connection and the worry we feel about what’s happening to our home.
