Ottawa, October 17, 2023 – The Global Dignity Day Canada Dignity Dialogue Videoconference Event aims to promote dignity, kindness and inclusive well-being in our diverse world. This event will feature a guided meditation session, a powerful panel discussion and a video montage of Global Dignity Day over the years created by a young Indigenous artist. Global Dignity Day is celebrated by over one million students and over eight million students participate in Global Dignity activities per year.

In really simple terms, co-learning is when teachers and students learn from each other, and co-creation is when everyone, including students, teachers, and sometimes artists, work together to create awesome projects. It's all about making learning more fun, interactive, and learner-centered!

This week, we’ve been going through some terminology that is new to many of our emerging artists. So we thought we would take a few days and explain some of these terms. We work a lot with community-based research and community engaged arts projects, and the terms “co-learning” and “co-creation” are mentioned frequently. Let’s take a look at what those terms actually mean.

Arts-based inquiry is like a fun and creative way of learning. It's when your teachers use art, like drawing, painting, music, or even dancing, to help you understand and explore different topics. So, you're not just reading from a textbook or listening to a teacher talk; you're using art to learn.

This season, we’re doing a lot of learning about terminology for the arts sector. One of the questions that came up recently was a question about what arts based inquiry means.

When we talk about "critical diversity," we're not just talking about having people from different backgrounds or with different qualities in a group. We're saying it's important to really value and include all those different people and their perspectives.

In simple terms, critical diversity is like using all the crayons in the box to create beautiful and colorful pictures, and making sure that everyone, even those who were left out before, gets a fair chance to be a part of the artwork. It’s about celebrating our differences and making sure they all count.
