Treatment: To Keep the Sun in a Jar

By Jamie F. Bell

For years, Maya and Chloe have performed their end-of-summer ritual: bottling the last dregs of sunlight at the old quarry. But this year, as their friendship frays, the ritual feels different. The jar grows impossibly heavy, and the woods around them fall unnaturally silent.

To Keep the Sun in a Jar

Format: Short Film / Anthology Episode | Est. Length: 10-12 minutes

Logline

As their lifelong friendship fractures on the cusp of adulthood, two teenage girls perform a childhood ritual to "trap summer" one last time, only to unleash a terrifying supernatural force when they break their own rules.

Themes

* The End of Childhood: The decay of a childish ritual serves as a metaphor for the painful and inevitable end of a formative friendship and an era of innocence.
* Tradition vs. Progress: The story explores the tension between honoring the sentimental traditions that bind us and the cynical desire to discard them in the name of growing up.
* Unleashed Consequences: A casual act of disrespect towards a personal tradition has tangible, terrifying consequences, suggesting that some bonds, and some magic, demand reverence.
* The Weight of Unspoken Feelings: The literal, supernatural weight of the jar of earth mirrors the heavy, unspoken emotions and resentments between the two friends.

Stakes

The girls risk not only the final thread of their lifelong friendship but also their safety when their casual dismissal of a childhood ritual unleashes a dangerous supernatural force they cannot comprehend or control.

Synopsis

On the last Saturday of August, childhood friends MAYA and CHLOE hike to an abandoned quarry to perform their annual ritual: bottling a handful of the last sun-warmed earth of the season to "keep the sun in a jar" through winter. The mood is tense; Chloe is leaving for the city soon, and her cynical, forward-looking attitude clashes with Maya's sentimental desire to hold onto their past.

They find the specific spot, marked by a wishbone-shaped birch tree. Chloe, dismissive of their "witchy" tradition, refuses to say the ritual words they invented as children. She hastily digs up the soil, seals it in a jam jar, and hands it to Maya. Maya is shocked by its impossible, supernatural weight.

As the last ray of sunlight vanishes, the woods fall silent, and the jar begins to emit a low, resonant hum. The soil inside glows with a pulsing, angry light. Chloe's bravado evaporates into fear. The lid of the jar begins to bulge, and before they can react, it tears off with a shriek of metal. A wave of heat and pressure erupts from the jar, knocking them to the ground.

In the aftermath, the jar lies empty, the soil is just cold dirt, and the normal sounds of the forest have returned. The supernatural energy is gone, but so is the fragile bond between them. Shaken and terrified, Maya realizes they haven't just broken a tradition; they have unleashed something ancient and powerful, and the consequences are far from over.

Character Breakdown

* MAYA (16): The protagonist. Sentimental, quiet, and deeply anxious about the impending changes in her life. She clings to the ritual as the last tangible piece of her friendship with Chloe. She is more in tune with the strangeness of the woods and senses that their actions are a transgression before it's too late.
* Psychological Arc: Maya begins the story desperately trying to preserve the past, believing that perfect adherence to a childhood tradition can stave off the pain of her friend leaving. By the end, she is violently thrust into a terrifying new reality, forced to understand that change is not just inevitable but can be a destructive force, and that her childhood is not just ending, but has been shattered.
* CHLOE (16): The deuteragonist. Pragmatic, restless, and eager to escape her small-town life. She masks her own anxieties about the future with a cynical and dismissive attitude towards the past, viewing their ritual as embarrassing and childish. Her bravado is a thin shield that shatters completely when faced with the supernatural consequences of her disrespect.

Scene Beats

1. THE SILENT HIKE: Chloe and Maya walk through the woods toward an abandoned quarry. The air is thick with the unspoken tension of Chloe’s imminent departure for the city. We establish their annual ritual of "canning summer."
2. THE LAST LIGHT: They find their spot—a clearing with a wishbone-shaped birch. Chloe’s dismissive attitude about the “magic” of the ritual clashes with Maya’s quiet reverence.
3. THE RITUAL BROKEN: Chloe digs up the last patch of sun-warmed earth. She pointedly refuses to say the childish "magic words" of the ritual, packing the soil into a jam jar with cynical haste.
4. THE IMPOSSIBLE WEIGHT: Chloe hands the sealed jar to Maya, who nearly drops it. It is unnaturally heavy, a dead weight. At the exact moment the sun disappears behind the ridge, a low, resonant hum starts, seeming to come from the jar itself.
5. THE ANGRY LIGHT: The soil inside the jar begins to pulse with a faint, then intensifying, light. The hum grows louder, vibrating through the ground. Chloe’s cynicism gives way to raw fear.
6. THE RELEASE: The metal lid on the jar bulges upward and then tears itself free, shooting into the darkness. A powerful, non-destructive wave of heat and pressure erupts from the jar, knocking both girls off their feet.
7. THE COLD AFTERMATH: The girls recover. The jar is empty, the soil is inert, and the woods are filled with normal evening sounds. The air is now distinctly cold. They stare at each other, the supernatural event having irrevocably severed the final thread of their friendship, leaving them with the chilling certainty that they have set something free.

Visual Style & Tone

The visual style will transition from naturalistic nostalgia to folk horror. The film opens with the warm, golden-hour glow of late summer, emphasizing the melancholic beauty of the dying season. As the ritual begins, the lighting becomes starker, with long, distorted shadows creating a sense of unease. The climax will be lit almost entirely by the eerie, pulsing, supernatural glow from within the jar, casting strange, dancing shadows on the girls' terrified faces against the deep blue of twilight.

The tone aligns with the grounded, supernatural suspense of The Twilight Zone or a folk-horror episode of Black Mirror, blending the raw emotional angst of a coming-of-age drama with an inexplicable, elemental dread. The atmosphere is heavy with melancholy and tension, building from a quiet, character-driven conflict to a sudden, terrifying supernatural release.
