SYNOPSIS
On a bleak, snowy afternoon, three children—DENNY, PAULINE, and EDGAR—stand anxiously before the dark and silent "Mrs. Johnston's Secondhand Books." The elderly owner has been missing for two days, a deeply unsettling break from their cherished after-school routine. The shop, usually a beacon of warmth and light, is now cold and forbidding. Driven by a mix of fear and loyalty, Denny tries the door and is shocked to find it unlocked. The children cautiously enter the frigid, dark interior, a place that feels alien without its usual comforting smells and sounds. A search of the familiar spaces—the reading chair, the counter, the small back room—reveals nothing but dust and an oppressive stillness. Just as their hope begins to fade, Pauline discovers a small, handmade bookmark on the floor: a beautifully painted winter robin. They recognize it as one of Mrs. Johnston's special markers, reserved only for her most treasured books.
