The air is a liquid shimmer. An oppressive, overexposed light washes out the sky. The heat haze refracts the broken skyline into a hallucination of jagged teeth.
Fine, rust-colored DUST coats everything.
SOUND of ragged, desperate BREATHING; the rhythmic SLAP-SLAP-SLAP of worn running shoes on buckled asphalt.
ELARA (20s), lean and sinewy, etched with exhaustion, forces herself onward. Sweat plasters strands of hair to her grime-streaked face. Her knees scream with every impact.
A tattered RELAY BAND is tied to her wrist. It looks impossibly heavy.
She passes an overturned CITY BUS, its windows blown out, the interior a sun-baked crypt.
Half-buried in a drift of grit lies a melted, faded PLASTIC TOY. A relic.
Elara forces her eyes up, squinting through the haze. Searching.
A figure materializes from the shimmering heat: KAI (50s), a former runner built of solid muscle. His face is a roadmap of stress lines, his hair streaked with gray. He holds a grimy, damp cloth and a small bottle of electrolytes.
He doesn't smile.
Elara stumbles the last few feet, her legs trembling violently. She almost collapses. Kai remains perfectly still, an anchor.
His voice is a low, raspy rumble.
Elara grabs the cloth from him, dabbing at her face. She takes the bottle, sucks down the lukewarm, mineral-tasting liquid.
A ghost of a wry smile touches his lips, but not his eyes. His gaze flicks down the empty street, then back to her.
Elara leans over, hands on her knees, desperately trying to pull the thin, hot air into her lungs.
Kai kneels, his touch firm and professional as he checks her ankle.
He looks out at the empty, shimmering street.
Kai’s eyes become intense, drilling into hers.
The question hangs in the oppressive air. Elara looks away, down at her scuffed trainers. The words are ash in her mouth.
SOUND of a distant, whirring HUM grows louder, accompanied by the fast, rhythmic slap of another runner's shoes. A RIVAL RUNNER, gaining.
Kai’s head snaps up. The philosopher is gone. The coach is back.
He thrusts the electrolyte bottle back at her.
Elara takes a long swig, the metallic taste coating her tongue. The words tumble out, desperate.
The word feels alien, fragile. Kai’s gaze softens for a fraction of a second.
The Rival Runner is closer now, a blur of motion in the haze. Elara starts jogging in place, her muscles screaming.
Up ahead, a faded RED FLAG tied to a twisted piece of rebar marks the next exchange point.
He slaps her shoulder. A sharp, bracing contact.
Elara EXPLODES forward. A burst of raw, primal energy.
The world becomes a streaking watercolor of gray and rust.
SOUND of Elara's heart POUNDING in her ears, drowning out the approaching Rival.
Her vision tunnels. The skeletal buildings blur. The sun presses down on her skull like a physical weight.
She pushes harder, arms pumping, chest on fire. The red flag seems to recede, then lurch forward.
She sees it. A small, almost imperceptible RIPPLE in the air just beyond the flag. A ghost of a memory. A promise.
It’s not about winning. It’s just… the run.
She LUNGES, arm outstretched, the tattered relay band flapping.
The world tilts.
SOUND CUTS OUT. Replaced by a high-pitched, deafening RING.
Everything moves in silent, surreal slow motion. Her arm extends. The flag is a red smear. The exchange point is a fuzzy, indistinct target.
Is anyone there?
Her legs buckle. The ground rushes up.
SOUND SLAMS back in. The GRITTY SCRAPE of her body hitting the buckled asphalt.
CLOSE ON ELARA'S FACE
Her cheek grinds against the pavement. The world is a blinding, overexposed white before snapping back into hazy focus.
The metallic tang of blood mixes with the taste of dust.
She feels a vague pressure on her hand. The relay band? Or just her own numb fingers, still clenched into a fist.
SOUND of a faint RUSTLE of fabric. A GASP of air, close by. Or maybe just the wind.
Elara lies there, unmoving. The outcome of the exchange is a complete mystery.
All that remains is the rough, unyielding ground beneath her, and—
SOUND: The distant, surreal, persistent HUM of a city that is both desolate and, somehow, still alive.
Her question hangs, unanswered, in the shimmering heat.
FADE TO BLACK.
