The Myth Of Being Apolitical
"Being 'apolitical' is a privilege; for many, 'politics' is just another word for their existence."
Why choosing Dignity, Equality and Justice is an unavoidable part of modern life.
I hear it all the time: 'I’m just not that into politics.' It sounds like a neutral stance, right? A way to stay above the fray and keep your peace. But here is the real-talk: being 'apolitical' is a privilege that not everyone has. If your life is not affected by the laws being passed or the rhetoric being shouted, it means the system was designed to work for you. For millions of others, 'politics' is just another word for their right to exist, to marry who they love, or to feel safe in their own skin.
Choosing to stay neutral in the face of injustice is not a balanced perspective. It is a choice to support the status quo. If you see a bully picking on someone and you choose to 'stay out of it,' the bully wins every single time. The same logic applies to social issues. When you opt out of the conversation, you are essentially saying that the current state of inequality is fine with you because it does not inconvenience you personally. That is not being neutral; that is being complicit.
Everything is political. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, the tech you use—it all comes from systems that either respect human dignity or exploit it. Acknowledging this isn't about being 'extreme.' It’s about being awake. It is about realizing that your choices have a ripple effect. Once you see the strings, you can’t unsee them. And once you see them, you have a responsibility to pull on the ones that lead toward equality. It is about taking ownership of your place in the world.
This doesn’t mean you have to spend 24/7 arguing on the internet. It means you stop pretending that your silence is a neutral act. It means you start asking questions about where your products come from and how your company treats its people. It means you vote, you advocate, and you listen. Being engaged is not a chore; it is the price of admission for a society that values justice. Don’t hide behind the 'not political' label. It’s a shield that’s starting to look a lot like a blindfold.
