Stories Today: Western Style Boys Love Meets Noir

Echoes of Other Worlds and Hidden Pasts

Our collection presents a series of unfinished tales, each a snapshot from a larger narrative that asks readers to engage beyond passive consumption. These are not fully formed short stories, but vivid scenes, moments designed to spark curiosity about the moments that precede and follow, challenging the reader to envision the complete arc.

This project stands as an experimental program at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It explores the potential for digital tools to partner in the creative process, fostering new forms of storytelling and scriptwriting, and advancing digital literacy skills and workflows.

Today’s selection weaves together Contemporary Fiction with the intriguing fusion of Western Style Boys Love, adding shades of Contemporary Fantasy, Young Adult Contemporary, and the gritty feel of Noir. Featured in this collection are stories by authors Tony Eetak and Jamie F. Bell.

Step into these pages and consider not just what is written, but what remains unwritten. Become an active participant in the story’s development, letting your imagination craft the missing scenes and resolutions.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

A child in a winter coat watches two glowing AI devices on a table in a community centre.

Winter Workings of Melgund

Author: Tony Eetak | Category: Slice of Life | Genre: Contemporary Fiction

The community centre held that particular scent of old wood polish mixed with something vaguely institutional, like weak coffee and dried-out hand sanitizer. Outside, the world was a crisp, biting white, snow clinging to every branch and fence post, but inside, a single, high-pitched hum cut through the quiet, a sound barely audible, yet insistent. It came from the two small, smooth devices resting on the long, scarred table in the corner, objects of endless fascination and slight bewilderment.

Two young men huddled together for warmth inside a frozen truck cab under a wool blanket.

Traction

Category: Coming-of-Age | Genre: Western Style Boys Love

Inside a wrecked truck on a remote logging road during a heavy snowstorm. The engine is dead, the temperature is dropping, and the silence is heavier than the snow.

Young man, Anthony, in a corduroy jacket, gazing contemplatively out a coffee shop window, an untouched latte on the table.

The Weight of the Untouched Mug

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Epistolary | Genre: Contemporary Fantasy

The bell above the door gave a tired jingle, barely audible over the low hum of the espresso machine and the muffled chatter that clung to the Portage Coffee House like the scent of burnt sugar. Outside, the early autumn air carried a sharp, metallic bite, threatening the first real frost. Inside, however, a sepia-toned warmth embraced everything, a deliberate act of resistance against the encroaching chill.

Two boys huddle in a rain-streaked cabin, sharing a biscuit, their faces thoughtful.

Mud-Stained Ambition

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Stream of Consciousness | Genre: Young Adult Contemporary

The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, pressed down. Early spring had turned the narrow track up Crimson Canyon into a treacherous ribbon of greasy mud and slick stone, each step a gamble against gravity. Overhead, the sky, a bruised purple, promised an imminent tempest, but beneath it, two figures, small against the vast, rugged landscape, pushed onward, their breath pluming in the chill.

A man and a woman in a dimly lit bar, conversing. Rain visible outside the window. The man holds a whiskey glass, looking contemplative, while the woman wipes the bar.

A Flicker in the Fallout

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Cinematic | Genre: Noir

Late autumn 2025. A dilapidated city bar, dimly lit, rain streaks down the grimy windows. The air is thick with the smell of stale beer and damp wool. A middle-aged man sits at the bar, nursing a drink, engaged in a conversation with the bar owner.

Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation

AI-Assisted Scriptwriting: At our incubator, we are actively exploring AI’s role in enhancing creative development across genres such as Contemporary Fiction, Western Style Boys Love, Contemporary Fantasy, Young Adult Contemporary, and Noir. Our studies focus on how AI can assist in crafting realistic dialogue for contemporary settings, constructing complex magical systems for fantasy, developing compelling character relationships in YA and BL stories, and generating the atmospheric tension essential for noir narratives. This research illuminates AI’s potential to address genre-specific storytelling demands and innovate scriptwriting techniques.

Talent Development and Training: Our work further examines the critical new skills that creative professionals must acquire. The practical application of AI in generating content for diverse genres, from the gritty urban landscapes of noir to the imaginative worlds of contemporary fantasy, underscores the importance of digital literacy and strategic management of AI tools. These aptitudes are becoming indispensable for future digital publishing and film production, enabling creators to seamlessly integrate AI assistance into their workflows for plot generation, world-building, and stylistic refinement.

We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.
