
Plutarch tells a story about an illiterate Athenian citizen who walked up to a statesman during a vote on exile. That messy context was entirely lost on the shard. The system didn’t care if a voter wanted to banish a politician because of a bad foreign policy decision or simply because the voter was having a terrible day.
Today, digital shards are everywhere. Modern civic organizations and local governments often use automated tools to handle public input. When a city council wants to know what residents think about a new housing development or a park redesign, they don’t hold long, screaming town halls anymore. Instead, they set up online forums. AI tools then ingest thousands of these community posts, comments, and complaints, sorting them into neat charts and consensus reports.
This software turns raw human pain, weird local grievances, and complicated neighborhood histories into polite, standardized points on a graph. It makes managing public input easy for city officials. However, it kills the uneven texture of real disagreement. A resident who is furious about a zoning change because it will ruin their livelihood is treated the same as someone who clicked a button because they dislike the color of a proposed building. The system aggregates, but it doesn’t listen.
Designing these systems for pure speed and harmony must stop. If the goal is healthy communities, digital tools need to preserve friction rather than smoothing it away. Good systems should flag weird outliers, highlight intense disagreements, and force decision-makers to look at the messy details of human conflict.
