Contemporary Drama, Mystery, and Action-Adventure Short Stories

Narratives on the Brink

These stories present themselves as incomplete narrative fragments, moments captured mid-scene, or pages torn from a larger book. They invite the reader into a world where beginnings and endings are fluid, encouraging a personal journey of discovery. Each piece evokes a sense of mystery, compelling the imagination to fill in what came before and what happens next.

This collection is an experiment at the intersection of human creativity and artificial intelligence. It explores how digital tools can act as a partner in the writing process, shaping new forms of storytelling and enhancing digital literacy. The project aims to understand the evolving landscape of collaborative narrative creation.

This collection spans genres from the emotional depth of Contemporary Drama and the intrigue of Mystery to the pulse-pounding excitement of Action-Adventure and Thriller, including nuances of Contemporary Mystery. In this selection, the distinct voice of Jamie F. Bell guides us through these varied landscapes.

We invite you to explore these tales, not just as a reader, but as a co-creator. Your engagement completes the narrative in your own mind, giving each unfinished tale a unique trajectory.

A man sits on a mossy fallen tree in an autumn forest, looking at carved initials on the bark, with a melancholic expression.

The Weight of Gold

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Paranormal Romance | Genre: Contemporary Drama

The air held a chill, sharp and clean, carrying the scent of wet soil and woodsmoke. Leaves, the colour of burnt umber and faded ochre, drifted from skeletal branches, collecting in silent, rustling heaps along the forgotten path. The sky, a vast, indifferent canvas of grey, promised an early dusk, and with it, the deeper, encroaching cold of the season.

Two teenagers in a garage intensely focused on trying to break open a locked briefcase on a workbench.

The Quarry Water Knows Your Name

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Dark Comedy | Genre: Mystery

The heat was a physical weight, the kind of southern Ontario humidity that made the air feel like wet wool. Below the lip of the quarry, the water was a deceptive sheet of turquoise, hiding its depth, its cold, and now, the thing they had just dragged from its gut. The effort had left them breathless, not from the exertion but from the sudden, sharp reality of the object sitting on the flat rock between them.

A senior woman brushes mud from an ancient, geometric flagstone on a riverbank.

The Prairie’s Breath

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Mythological Retelling | Genre: Action-Adventure

The humid summer air, thick with the scent of river mud and blossoming prairie grasses, clung to Elaine like a damp wool blanket. Her cotton shirt was already clinging, a testament to the early afternoon’s relentless sun beating down on the Red River banks. She pushed a stray wisp of silver hair from her brow, the effort barely registering as she squinted at the tangle of roots ahead. The path, barely more than an animal trail, narrowed drastically, vanishing into a dense thicket just beyond the old rail bridge. Most people turned back here, opting for the paved promenades, but Elaine found herself drawn to the wilder margins, to where the city’s manicured edges frayed into something older, less tamed.

A senior man kneels on a wet autumn street at night, closely examining a strange, geometric star etched into the asphalt.

A Speck of Absurdity on Main Street

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Slice of Life | Genre: Thriller

The wind carried the scent of damp leaves and impending snow, a familiar late-autumn perfume in Winnipeg. Andrew, a man whose wrinkles seemed less from age and more from years of relentless scrutiny, pulled his woolen scarf tighter. The neon glow of Portage Avenue bled into the historical brickwork of the Exchange District, painting the wet pavement in streaky, artificial colours. His boots crunched on fallen ash leaves, a comforting, solitary rhythm that had defined his evenings since Eleanor passed, five years prior.

A folded note lies on a cafe table in the foreground, while the mysterious woman who dropped it walks away in the background.

A Glitch in the Cold Brew

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Stream of Consciousness | Genre: Contemporary Mystery

The heat is a physical presence in the city today. A suffocating blanket that makes the air shimmer above the pavement. Inside the cool, air-conditioned sanctuary of Thom Bargen on Sherbrook, the world feels sane again. I’m thinking about the digital and the physical, the way a photograph of a mural is both a copy and a new thing entirely.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an experimental, creative research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners Storytelling clubs. Each chapter is a unique interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment, born from a collaboration between artists and applied AI researchers, designed to explore the boundaries of creative writing, automation, and storytelling. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario.
