Stop Rotting and Start Steering
"Comfort is where dreams go to get dusty; you have to lean into the cringe to grow."
Why looking forward in life means you can't just stay still.
The main reason you’re feeling like a literal background character right now is that you’re waiting for a plot twist to just drop into your lap. Newsflash: the writers' room is empty and you’re the only one with the script. If you stay in your room staring at the ceiling fan until it starts looking like a portal to a better life, you’re going to be waiting until 2030. Standing still is basically a slow-motion rot for your brain. We aren’t plants; we don’t just need sunlight and water to thrive. We need friction, movement, and people who will actually call us out when we’re being mid.
This isn't just me being a hater. There’s this psychological thing called the locus of control. If you have an external one, you think the universe is just throwing curveballs at you and there's nothing you can do. It makes you feel helpless and, frankly, boring. But if you flip the switch to an internal locus of control, you start realizing that even the small moves—like finally joining that run club or showing up to the community garden—are what actually build your life. You’re the one deciding the vibe, not the algorithm.
Looking forward in life means you have to actually look. Like, physically use your eyes to find something new in your neighbourhood. Go to the community centre and see what’s happening. Even if it’s just a weird pottery class or a bunch of people playing pick-up basketball, being around others reminds you that you’re part of a bigger machine. Isolation is a trap that makes your problems feel massive. When you’re around people, those problems start to look like what they actually are: manageable.
Don't wait for the "perfect time" because that’s a myth designed to keep you comfortable and stagnant. Comfort is where dreams go to get dusty. You need to be okay with the awkwardness of being the new person in the room. That first step out the door is usually the hardest because your brain is trying to protect you from the "danger" of being slightly embarrassed. Lean into the cringe. The cringe is where the growth is.
Community isn't just a buzzword; it’s the net that catches you when you finally decide to jump into something new. You can’t do this solo. Find the people who make you want to be a better version of yourself and actually show up for them. Movement creates momentum. Once you start rolling, it’s way harder for the rot to set in. Stop being a spectator in your own life and start making some noise.
