Softness Is The New Spiked Collar
"Choosing to stay gentle when you have every reason to be bitter is the rawest rebellion."
Staying gentle in a world designed to make you bitter is the radical core of resilience.
I still remember the smell of stale beer and melting asphalt on those July nights when we thought we could scream our way into a better reality. Everyone wanted to be the hardest person in the room. We wore our cynicism like armour, thinking that if we cared less, we’d hurt less. Looking back, that wasn't strength. It was just a fancy way of hiding.
True resilience is actually the terrifying act of staying kind when you have every reason to be a jerk. It’s easy to be cold. It’s lazy to be "done" with people. The real DIY project is keeping your heart open when the world feels like it’s constantly trying to shut it for you. We spent years building stages out of scrap wood and amplifiers held together by tape, but the most important thing we ever built was a space where it was safe to be vulnerable.
Psychologists call this "radical acceptance." It isn’t about liking the mess or pretending the heatwave isn't killing your vibe. It’s about looking at the reality of a situation—the broken gear, the empty pockets, the burnout—and choosing not to let it harden your spirit. When you stop fighting the reality of a tough moment, you save all that energy for actually moving through it. You stop wasting your battery on being mad that things aren't perfect.
Kindness is a massive middle finger to a system that wants us isolated and angry. Choosing to check in on your friends when you’re struggling yourself is a form of leadership that doesn't need a title. It’s about a locus of control. You can’t control the rent or the weirdly aggressive humidity, but you can control the way you treat the person standing next to you in the pit.
We used to think resilience meant being indestructible. We were wrong. Resilience is being incredibly breakable and showing up anyway, patches and all. It’s the kid who shares their water when everyone is fainting from the heat. It’s the decision to not pass on the trauma you inherited. That’s the most punk thing you’ll ever do. Keeping that softness alive is a full-time job, but honestly, it’s the only way we actually survive the summer.
