The Shared Power Grid
"We are neurobiologically wired to mirror the resilience we observe in the people around us."
Finding inspiration and motivation through collective resilience and the strength of our community ties.
Living through a dry spell of the spirit usually feels like a solo mission, but that is a lie we tell ourselves to maintain a sense of control. Most of us in our fifties and beyond have spent decades trying to be the "strong one," the person everyone else leans on until our own foundations start to creak. When the stress gets heavy, the instinct is to pull the curtains and wait for the weather to change.
Growth during the hard seasons is rarely a private project, though. It happens in the grocery checkout line, the community garden, or the awkward silence shared with a neighbour while checking the mail in the humid evening air. Inspiration and motivation are often treated like internal batteries we have to charge ourselves. If you are empty, you’re just out of luck.
That is not how it works. The reality is more like a shared power grid. We find the spark to keep going not from looking inward until we are dizzy, but from witnessing the quiet persistence of the people around us. This is the most grounding realization you can have: your resilience is a reflection. We are neurobiologically wired to mirror the resilience we observe in the people around us.
This phenomenon is tied to what psychologists call relational resilience. It is the idea that our ability to bounce back is not just an individual trait, but a product of our connections. It is the "we" that heals the "me." When the world feels particularly chaotic, looking for inspiration in the small, mundane victories of our community is a form of survival. It is the neighbour who still plants their marigolds even when the news is bleak.
It is the friend who calls just to vent, reminding you that your struggle is not a personal failure, but a shared human condition. This creates a spillover effect where one person’s calm becomes the group's baseline. We are often told that growth is about "levelling up" or hitting new personal bests. In reality, for those of us who have seen a few more summers, growth looks more like widening the circle.
It is about the courage to be seen in our stressed-out, unpolished states and realizing that the community does not pull away. Instead, they lean in. That collective leaning creates a structural integrity that no individual can match. You do not have to be your own sun; sometimes, you just have to be part of the constellation. It is about maintaining the vibe when the lights go dim.
