Why We Need Third Spaces Now

"A healthy community needs a place where everyone is welcome regardless of their bank account."

Let us believe in the power of community by reclaiming public areas.

The 'Third Space' is a term for the places we inhabit that aren't home (the first space) or work (the second space). They are libraries, parks, public squares, and community centers. For a long time, these spaces have been under threat from privatization and the digital shift. But in 2025, we are seeing a massive pushback. People are tired of the isolation of their living rooms. They are craving the 'soft' interactions that only happen in public. They want to be around people without having to buy something or perform a task.

From a Zen perspective, these spaces are essential for practicing 'non-attachment.' In a public park, you don't own the bench, and neither does the person sitting next to you. You are both temporary guests in a shared reality. This teaches us how to coexist with people who are different from us. It humbles us. We see the family celebrating a birthday, the student studying for finals, and the elderly couple holding hands. We see the full spectrum of the human experience, and it makes our own problems feel a little more manageable. It places us in a larger context.

When we believe in each other, we invest in these spaces. We fight to keep libraries open and parks clean. We understand that a healthy community needs a place where everyone is welcome regardless of their bank account. These are the lungs of a city. Without them, the social fabric starts to fray. We become more suspicious of our neighbors and more locked into our own bubbles. But when we share a public square, we are reminded of our common dignity. We see that we all want the same basic things: safety, connection, and a bit of sunshine.

Reclaiming these spaces starts with actually using them. Take your book to the park. Do your crossword at the library. Sit on the steps of the community center and just watch the world go by. By being there, you are validating the importance of that space. You are part of the ecosystem. When we show up in public, we are saying that we believe in the power of community to sustain us. We are saying that we are not just consumers; we are citizens, neighbors, and friends. And in that shared space, anything becomes possible.
