The Danger Of Going It Alone
"Loneliness thrives in the silence we keep when we're too afraid to look needy."
The role of community in maintaining your mental health and beating isolation.
We live in the most connected era in history, yet we are all starving for actual connection. It is the great irony of 2025. You can see what your high school classmate had for lunch, but you haven't had a real conversation with someone who actually knows your soul in three weeks. We have replaced community with consumption, and it is making our mental health tank. Humans are pack animals. We are not meant to process the world’s madness from the isolation of a glowing screen.
I know reaching out feels cringe sometimes. You don't want to be the one to double-text, or you're afraid you'll look needy. But let me tell you something: everyone else is sitting in their room feeling the exact same way. Everyone is waiting for someone else to go first. When you send that 'thinking of you' text or ask a friend to go for a walk, you aren't just helping yourself; you are throwing a lifeline to them, too. Vulnerability is the only way out of the vacuum.
Community care is just as important as self-care. While we focus a lot on our individual habits, we often forget that we are influenced by the people around us. If you are only consuming content from people who are angry or cynical, you will become angry and cynical. You need to find people who remind you that the world is more than just a series of problems to be solved. You need people who can make you laugh until your stomach hurts, even when things are messy.
Start small. You don't need a huge squad. Just one or two people who you can be honest with is enough. Make a commitment to see someone in person once a week. No phones, no scrolling, just actual presence. Look at their face, hear the tone of their voice, and remember that you are part of something bigger than your own head. Isolation is a liar that tells you that you are the only one struggling. Community is the truth that sets you free.
