  1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Start by introducing the topic of digital arts and how technology has changed the industry.

“Welcome to today’s event where we will be exploring the topic of digital arts and how technology has revolutionized the creative industry. Over the last few decades, technology has transformed the world of art and opened up new possibilities for artists to express themselves. With the introduction of digital tools and software, artists are now able to create stunning and intricate designs, animations, and multimedia projects that were once thought to be impossible.”

“The impact of technology on the art world has been immense, not just in terms of the creative possibilities it has opened up but also in terms of how art is created, shared and consumed. Digital platforms have allowed artists to reach a global audience and connect with fellow creatives in ways that were once unimaginable. This has led to the emergence of new styles, genres and movements in art, as well as the rise of digital art as a respected and legitimate form of artistic expression. In today’s digital age, the possibilities are endless, and I hope that today’s event will inspire you to explore the world of digital arts and discover the many opportunities that it presents.”

  • Ask students if they have any experience with digital arts, or if they know anyone who has pursued a career in this field.

“I’d like to start by asking if any of you have any experience with digital arts, or if you know anyone who has pursued a career in this field. It’s always helpful to learn from one another and to understand the unique perspectives that each person brings to the table. Whether you have dabbled in digital art on your own or have seen someone create something amazing using technology, I believe that we can all learn something from each other and gain a deeper appreciation for the power and potential of digital art.”

  1. What are the Digital Arts? (10 minutes)

  • Define digital arts and its various career paths, such as graphic design, video game design, animation, and digital marketing.

“Digital arts is a diverse field that includes a wide range of creative and technical skills. At its core, it involves using technology to create visual and interactive experiences, such as graphic design, video game design, animation, and digital marketing. Digital arts has grown significantly in recent years, as more and more companies and organizations are seeking to engage their audiences through digital media.”

“There are many career paths available in the digital arts field, and it can be a great choice for individuals who are interested in combining their artistic abilities with technical skills. Some of the most popular career paths include graphic designer, web developer, video game designer, animator, digital marketer, and user experience designer. With the increasing demand for digital content and the rapid advancement of technology, the digital arts field is constantly evolving and offers exciting opportunities for creative and innovative individuals.”

  • Discuss the differences between traditional and digital arts, and how technology has impacted the field.

“Traditional arts refer to art forms that are created using physical mediums such as paint, pencil, clay, or canvas. These mediums have been used for centuries to create beautiful and meaningful art. On the other hand, digital arts are art forms created using digital technology, such as computers, software, and digital drawing tablets. Digital arts allow artists to create art in a completely new way, by giving them access to tools and techniques that were not possible with traditional mediums.”

“One of the main differences between traditional and digital art is the speed and precision with which artists can create their work. With digital tools, artists can make changes quickly and easily, allowing them to experiment with different colors, shapes, and textures without having to start over from scratch. Another difference is the level of accessibility that digital art provides. Digital art can be easily shared online and viewed by people all over the world, which can open up new opportunities for artists to showcase their work and build their careers.”

“Technology has had a huge impact on the field of art, providing artists with new tools and techniques to create their work. Digital art has made it possible for artists to create art in a way that was not possible with traditional mediums, and has opened up new career paths in areas such as graphic design, video game design, animation, and digital marketing. As technology continues to evolve, it is likely that the field of digital arts will continue to grow and provide new opportunities for artists to explore and innovate.”

  1. Emerging Technologies (15 minutes)

  • Discuss emerging technologies and how they are being used in the digital arts industry, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D printing.

“Emerging technologies are playing an increasingly important role in the digital arts industry, offering artists and designers new tools and opportunities for creative expression. Virtual reality, or VR, is one such technology that has gained significant popularity in recent years. VR enables artists to create fully immersive and interactive experiences, where viewers can engage with their work in a more personal and intimate way. This technology has been used to create everything from 360-degree music videos to virtual art installations and museum exhibits.”

“Another emerging technology that is transforming the digital arts industry is augmented reality, or AR. AR blends the real world with digital elements, creating interactive experiences that can be accessed through smartphones or other devices. AR has been used in everything from advertising and marketing campaigns to art installations and interactive exhibits. By using AR, artists can create truly unique and engaging experiences that blur the lines between the physical and digital worlds.”

“Lastly, 3D printing is another emerging technology that is rapidly transforming the digital arts industry. With 3D printing, artists and designers can bring their creations to life in ways that were once impossible. From sculptures to jewelry and even clothing, 3D printing offers endless possibilities for creativity and innovation. As this technology becomes more accessible and affordable, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the world of digital arts.”

  1. Skills and Pathways (20 minutes)

  • Identify the skills needed to pursue a career in digital arts, such as design skills, programming knowledge, and problem-solving abilities.

“To pursue a career in digital arts, there are several skills that are essential. The first skill is design. An artist must have a strong foundation in design principles such as color theory, typography, and layout to create visually appealing digital art. Additionally, artists must have a deep understanding of various software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create and edit their digital art. These programs require a high level of technical proficiency, so it is important for artists to have a strong understanding of how these programs work.”

“Another important skill for a career in digital arts is programming knowledge. Digital art is often created using code and programming languages, so it is important for artists to have a foundational understanding of programming. This knowledge will allow them to create interactive and responsive digital art that can be used in various applications such as websites, mobile apps, and video games.”

“Problem-solving abilities are also crucial for a career in digital arts. Digital artists must be able to think critically and creatively to find solutions to technical and creative problems that arise during the creation process. They must also be able to work collaboratively with other artists and developers to ensure that the final product is of the highest quality. With these skills, digital artists will be able to succeed in the rapidly growing field of digital arts.”

  • Discuss different educational pathways, such as vocational schools, community colleges, and university degrees.

“When it comes to pursuing a career in digital arts, there are various educational pathways to choose from. One option is vocational schools, which offer short-term programs that focus on specific skills like graphic design or video editing. These programs tend to be more hands-on and practical, preparing students for entry-level positions in the industry. Another option is community college, which offers two-year associate degree programs in digital arts. These programs cover a broad range of topics and provide a solid foundation for further education or employment. Additionally, community colleges tend to be more affordable and accessible for many students.”

“For those looking to pursue a bachelor’s degree, universities offer four-year programs in digital arts and related fields. These programs tend to be more theory-based and comprehensive, covering topics such as art history, design theory, and business. Universities also offer opportunities for research and specialization, and provide students with a broader range of career options. It’s important to research and compare different programs to find the one that fits your career goals and interests.”

“An example of an excellent arts entrepreneurship program is the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) Entrepreneurial Studies Program. This program offers a unique blend of art and business courses, providing students with the skills needed to launch and sustain a successful creative business. MCAD also offers opportunities for internships, mentorship, and networking, connecting students with industry professionals and real-world experience. Whether you choose a vocational school, community college, or university program, it’s important to find a program that meets your needs and goals for pursuing a career in digital arts.”

Creative practitioners are needed more than ever to tackle complex projects and issues in society. An ever-changing world calls for adaptable, creative thinkers and innovators who know how to collaborate, problem-solve, and put plans into action. In the Entrepreneurial Studies program, students gain hands-on experience connecting their creative practice –or practices–within social, environmental, and professional contexts. As MCAD’s only Bachelor of Science degree, and the region’s only art-and-design college with this type of program, this major offers a unique opportunity to apply creativity, strategy, and innovation to client- or community-based projects.

  1. Industry Trends (10 minutes)

  • Discuss the future of the digital arts industry and how emerging technologies will shape it.

“The demand for digital artists has been steadily increasing over the past decade in Canada, and it is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. With the rise of technology, businesses and organizations are increasingly relying on digital arts to create engaging and effective online content. As the industry continues to evolve and grow, it is likely that we will see an increasing focus on digital arts entrepreneurship, with more and more artists starting their own businesses and working as freelancers. This will require a new set of skills beyond just creative and technical expertise, including marketing, financial management, and business strategy. As such, it will be important for aspiring digital artists to not only develop their creative skills, but also to gain a solid understanding of the business side of the industry in order to succeed in the competitive landscape of the digital arts industry.”

  • Talk about the demand for digital artists and where the industry is going.
