Week Six: Introduction to Sound Design for Emerging Artists

A one-hour workshop introduces emerging artists aged 16-25 to the basics of sound design, including recording, editing, and manipulation of sound. 

Overview:

Participants will learn about different careers in sound design and the skills required for those jobs. The workshop includes a combination of instructor-led instruction, hands-on practice with iPads or Macs using GarageBand or other sound editing software, and group discussion. At the end of the workshop, participants will have a basic understanding of sound design and its importance in various industries. They will also be equipped with skills to continue practicing and improving their sound design abilities.

Objective:

The objective of this workshop is to introduce participants to the basic principles of sound design, including recording, editing, and manipulation of sound. Participants will learn about different careers in sound design and the skills required for those jobs.

Materials:

  • iPads or Macs with GarageBand or other sound editing software
  • Headphones
  • Microphones

Outline:

I. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Welcome and introduction of the instructor and participants
  • Overview of the workshop objectives and activities

II. Sound Design Basics (20 minutes)

  • Introduction to sound design principles, including recording, editing, and manipulation of sound
  • Demonstration of basic sound editing techniques using GarageBand or other software
  • Hands-on practice for participants to edit and manipulate sound

III. Careers in Sound Design (20 minutes)

  • Introduction to different careers in sound design, including music production, sound engineering, foley artists, and sound designers
  • Discussion of the skills and tools needed for each career

IV. Hands-on Practice (20 minutes)

  • Participants will work in pairs to create a short sound design project
  • They will record and edit sound using the skills they learned in the first section

V. Conclusion and Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Participants will share their projects and receive feedback
  • Discussion of the importance of sound design in various industries and how participants can continue to develop their skills

Assessment:

  • The instructor will observe participants’ progress during the hands-on activities and provide feedback and guidance.
  • Participants will receive a short questionnaire to reflect on their learning and provide feedback on the workshop.

Extensions:

  • Participants can explore additional sound design resources online to continue developing their skills.
  • Participants can research and present on specific careers in sound design that interest them.
  • Participants can collaborate on a longer sound design project using more advanced techniques and software.
