2023 Pop up Gallery Incubator Program

From projects like the ArcticNet-supported Inclusion in Northern Research, to Our People, Our Climate with the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, @1860 Winnipeg is the place where many of our current adventures came to be.

In its first year, this experimental digital arts and cultural entrepreneurship incubator has grown to work with urban and newly-urban Indigenous emerging artists from Winnipeg, across Canada and beyond. The @1860 Winnipeg program has presented at ArcticNet’s 2021 Annual Scientific Meetings, the Arctic Science Summit Week in Lisbon, Portugal, the Auviqsaqtut Inuit Studies Conference in Winnipeg, among many others.

Incubating Digital Arts and Cultural Entrepreneurship

@1860 Winnipeg formally launched as its own initiative in 2021 with strategic innovation funding from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse program. It later evolved into a seasonal winter and summer program, with support from the Manitoba Arts Council.

As we enter our second year of arts and cultural entrepreneurship programming, our program is beginning to exit its experimental phase.

This year we’re excited to explore designing new, exciting creative hubs that will be able to provide our participating artists with sustainable exhibition spaces and opportunities to further advance their arts sector training and professional development.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

As we start to explore ways to measure our own program’s inclusivity and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, we wanted to start by adapting elements of the ArcticNet EDI Strategy.

It is a living, adaptable process we are already familiar with and feel is aligned with many of the key priorities and values most relevant to advancing our efforts.

In our first year as a project, our activities included measurable actions towards addressing 53 (49%) of the Key Performance Indicators.

Building resilient communities through the arts

Disrupted by the pandemic, and set back by an unfortunate flood, youth and emerging artists from the upcoming Gallery 603 Project are working hard to re-start establishing an arts incubator gallery program for their communities in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario.

Next year, our Winnipeg team is excited to continue exploring ways to adapt and enhance the work done this year, particularly with the Our People, Our Climate project led by the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and National Kindness Week events with Global Dignity Canada.
