Just two decades ago, this was a booming career path, a top-five fastest-growing job category. Today, sophisticated AI handles most of those tasks. The job isn\u2019t gone, but its core functions have changed. Dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve always understood &#8220;skill&#8221; as the ability to perform a specific, repeatable task with proficiency. &#8220;Competence&#8221; meant you could do it well. &#8220;Expertise&#8221; implied mastery over those actions. This traditional view worked for centuries. It defined our apprenticeships, our careers, our entire economic model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these definitions are failing us now. They were built for a world before AI. This mismatch creates confusion. It fuels anxiety among professionals. It leads to inefficient training programs that teach obsolete abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Picture a master carpenter. They\u2019re tasked with building a complex, innovative structure. Their hands know wood. Their eyes gauge angles. They\u2019ve spent decades honing their craft. But they insist on traditional methods. They ignore AI-driven design tools. They refuse automated fabrication systems. These tools are seen as a threat to their expertise, maybe just simple aids to their established &#8216;doing&#8217; skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their expertise is in execution. They try to do the entire task themselves. Or they force the AI into a subservient, assistive role. They want to be the sole actor. They miss the macro-level intelligence these systems offer. Humans are good at problem framing. We excel at critical interpretation and ethical judgment. AI, conversely, offers processing power, pattern recognition, and rapid iteration. Expertise isn\u2019t about doing the task anymore. It\u2019s about directing the intelligence that does the task. It\u2019s about translating between human intention and machine output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does this mean for our education systems? How do we even measure this &#8220;directing skill&#8221;? Is it an innate aptitude, or something we can train? It will be about intellectual agility. It will be about the ability to command, interpret, and adapt alongside increasingly sophisticated AI partners. Our recognition of talent will shift profoundly.
