His true self, quite another.\u201d And for a long time, that felt absolutely right. You were one person behind the counter, another at your kitchen table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of Mrs. Henderson, the baker. Down at the market, she was all flour dust and sharp prices, known for her rye bread. A public figure, in her own small way. But back in her cramped cottage, she was just a tired mother, patching socks by lamplight, her market persona left behind with her apron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town square, the shop door, the front parlor. These were the boundaries. What happened in one place truly stayed there. Physical space drew clear lines around who you were and what you were doing. The awareness that your coffee order and your online comment might just be two lines in the same evolving sketch. The old hats, they\u2019re still there. They just don&#8217;t have separate hooks anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that picture, stitched together from all those little bits, keeps changing. Always.
