We think we’re building better learners. We’re often just building faster robots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI in education runs on a continuous feedback loop. It’s powerful. It responds instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it’s also narrow. It sees speed, accuracy, repetition. It profoundly misses the quiet parts of human learning: the hesitation, the confusion, the moment a concept drifts then clicks into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s AI-mediated learning moves fast. It gives instant feedback, tuned to observable actions. Think back to B.F. Skinner’s teaching machines. Early programmed instruction. They demanded a correct answer, right away. These systems saw learning as a series of correct responses. They optimized for observable behavior. They overlooked the *why*. The internal struggle. The actual thinking process. AI does much the same. It cares what you do, not how you wrestle with an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People tried to fix this blind spot. They added more sensors. Eye-tracking. Keystroke analysis. Micro-pauses. The idea was to capture *more* data. More signals. But it just dumped more numbers into the same old behavioral feedback loop. Like adding extra gauges to a car that still doesn’t understand the road. It made the system noisier. Not smarter.
