“The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.” That’s Dietrich Bonhoeffer, talking about future generations. But it also applies to what we leave each other, right now. We used to have places for just being<\/em>. Places that weren’t about buying anything.<\/p>\n\n

These were our civic commons. Think town squares, the local library, even old diners with bottomless coffee. Spots where you could sit, talk, or just exist without a tab running. They were neutral ground. You didn’t need a reason to be there beyond showing up.<\/p>\n\n

Many are gone now. Others got slick, wrapped up in commerce. They want you to spend, not just stay. This shift leaves people feeling cut off. Alone, even when surrounded by others.<\/p>\n\n

So what tried to fill that hole? Online forums, maybe. But they often just echo back what you already believe. Malls popped up, big shiny boxes, but they’re about shopping, about consumption. Not shared life. Big box stores, same deal. You grab your stuff and leave. No real connection built. These places missed the point. They failed to bring people together in any deep way.<\/p>\n\n

But then, something else stepped up. The arts. Galleries, small studios, local theaters. Makerspaces where you can build things. They’re not just surviving; they’re thriving in a quiet way. People show up there. They go to do<\/em> something. To see<\/em> a play. To make<\/em> a pot. It’s active, not just watching or buying. These places ask for your presence. Your actual, physical self.<\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s more than just the art itself. These spots offer neutral ground, much like the old commons. They get different people talking. You learn a skill alongside someone new. You share an experience. That builds real meaning. It creates a feeling of being part of something larger. A purpose beyond your own front door.<\/p>\n\n
