A tidy march from simple to complex, from rough to smooth. But if you talk to the folks in 2197, the ones who spend their days sifting through what we left behind, they\u2019ll tell you it\u2019s a lot messier than that. They see our 21st-century urban farms, those rooftop patches and community plots, not as quaint relics but as something profoundly odd and important. They call it &#8220;proto-infrastructural ecology.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a mouthful, I know. But it gets at the heart of it. They look at those old gardens like we look at ancient aqueducts\u2014early, clumsy attempts at building something necessary, something that grew into the very bones of their world. It just shrugs off their labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what does this legacy of dirt and data mean for them, with their perfectly controlled environments and their ultra-efficient farms? It means their history isn&#8217;t clean. It shows them a time when the lines were blurry, when humans and their simple machines fumbled around together, trying to coax life from concrete. It makes them question what &#8220;wild&#8221; even meant, back when the wild was a few pots on a fire escape.
