What if the way someone made a clay pot centuries ago is now a data point for how we feed people? It sounds strange, but it’s happening.<\/p>\n\n

We see traditional materials and practices popping up in new places, often linked to food. Where do these old ways suddenly appear? You might spot specific dyes, once used in ancient textiles, showing up in food packaging today. Or notice how a basketry technique from a certain region gets adapted for storing fresh produce in a modern supply chain. Even old farming tool designs can influence how we build new agricultural technology. It\u2019s about taking the physical object, the surface look, and moving it over.<\/p>\n\n

So, what parts of an old craft are easy to write down? Things like material types, specific measurements, or patterns. These are the bits that systems can grab. A planning system built for efficiency needs inputs it can count. It needs to know “this type of clay,” or “that weave pattern.” It wants to turn a skill into a set of instructions. So, materials, techniques, and visual details become data points. They get cataloged, maybe even assigned a number, ready for use in a big system.<\/p>\n\n

But what about the messy stuff, the things you can\u2019t put on a chart? This is where things get complicated. Imagine a potter who knows exactly when to harvest clay from a certain riverbed, guided by generations of watching water levels and soil changes. Or a community with rules about who can use which patch of land, and when, rules that aren\u2019t written down but are understood by everyone. These are seasonal awareness, relational land agreements, the embodied decision-making that guides a craftsperson. You can’t just type these into a spreadsheet. They don\u2019t fit into a system that asks for discrete facts. They resist being turned into a simple input.<\/p>\n\n

So, what’s lost when we just take the surface? A lot, it turns out. When planning systems only grab the easy-to-code bits, they miss the deeper reasons why a practice works. They get the “what” but not the “why.” This can create real gaps in how we try to make food systems strong and lasting. If you only know *how* to weave a basket but not *why* it’s woven that way in that season, or who shares the reeds, you’re missing important pieces. The system becomes less smart, less able to handle real-world problems.<\/p>\n\n
