In 1966, Patrick Suppes predicted that mainframe computers would soon know students as intimately as Aristotle knew Alexander. He saw a future of perfect, tailored instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the hardware told a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at the PLATO terminals from the 1970s. These orange-glowing plasma screens didn’t look at the student. They didn’t notice a furrowed brow. They reacted to keystrokes and error rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We traded human relationship for closed-loop optimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early AI tutors turned learning into a cybernetic loop. The machine doesn’t actually teach. It adjusts task difficulty based on how fast someone presses a key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archaeology cannot find the teacher’s sigh in the database. The student’s posture, the shared frustration, the long silence before understanding\u2014none of this left a digital fossil record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shadow curriculum of human presence is entirely missing from the code. What we find in the archives are tables of response times and error codes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go into a modern rural classroom today. You will see a silent room of kids staring at progress bars on adaptive math software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suppes got his efficiency, but not his intimacy. We built a faster way to be alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
