This search has led the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to the doorstep of small, northern communities. What happens when a multi-billion-dollar nuclear tomb is slated for construction next to a town with no traffic lights, and the locals are handed an artificial intelligence platform to fight for their share of the dirt? In Melgund Township, a tiny community nestled in the dense boreal forest of northwestern Ontario, this question is shifting from a theoretical exercise into raw political reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melgund is a place of gravel roads, black spruce, and deep Precambrian rock. It sits near the proposed site for the Deep Geological Repository, a massive underground network of tunnels designed to hold those millions of radioactive bundles. This quiet patch of wilderness is about to become one of the most heavily scrutinized pieces of ground in North America. The physical reality of the project means heavy machinery, specialized drilling, and a sudden influx of outside experts, engineers, and government officials.
