The air smelled of motor oil, ink, and the metallic tang of lead alloy heating in the pots of Linotype machines. Operators sat before heavy keyboards, their fingers triggering brass matrices that slid down chutes to form lines of type. Success required a rhythm, an awareness of mechanical resistance, and the manual skill to clear jams before the hot metal sprayed.
