Whyte published a study on how people used public spaces in Manhattan. Among his findings was a simple detail about park benches. People rarely sat on benches placed back-to-back, even when the park was crowded. To encourage interaction, or even just to make people comfortable sitting near each other, benches had to be placed at specific angles. The physical layout of the wood and metal directly shaped how people behaved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local neighborhood networks like Nextdoor use digital layouts that serve a similar purpose. Instead of physical angles, these platforms use algorithmic notification systems and feed structures to position users. The design choices behind these feeds determine who sees which posts and which neighbors interact. Just like the park benches, the architecture of the feed dictates the nature of the contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sociological research has long pointed to the value of &#8220;weak ties&#8221;\u2014the casual acquaintances made through regular, low-stakes contact in a physical neighborhood. Network science shows that physical proximity builds trust because people repeatedly see each other in neutral settings. Digital proximity, however, does not seem to produce the same result. Data on online communities shows that geographic sorting in digital feeds often increases polarization, as algorithms prioritize high-engagement, controversial posts over mundane local updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shift corresponds with a decline in physical local groups. Data from the General Social Survey shows a multi-decade drop in membership in local civic clubs, bowling leagues, and parent-teacher associations. While people are still joining groups, they are increasingly doing so online. These online groups are usually organized around narrow interests rather than shared geography, which reduces the chance of running into people with different viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physical communities historically relied on inconvenience. In a physical neighborhood, someone has to see their neighbors at the grocery store, the post office, or on the sidewalk. This unavoidable contact creates a friction that makes it harder to completely dismiss other people. Online, this friction is absent. If a neighbor posts something annoying on a local app, someone can block them or mute their updates instantly, removing them from their digital field of vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PTA membership data and local municipal board records show a steady decrease in participation in local governance. People are less likely to attend town halls or sit on school boards, but they are highly active in localized online forums. The lack of physical friction in these online spaces makes it easier to engage in conflict without the moderating influence of face-to-face contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To see how these design choices influence your day, turn off algorithmic sorting on one local app for a week. Change the settings to show posts in chronological order, or turn off push notifications entirely. Another option is to sit on a physical bench in your neighborhood for fifteen minutes without looking at a phone.
