The freezer aisle hums. On the shelves, a box of crackers sits exactly at chest height, positioned for an easy reach. It is not an accident. A grocery store is built to direct movement and attention before a shopper even makes a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large food brands pay millions of dollars in slotting fees to secure these prime spots. The space at eye level is the most expensive real estate in the building. Cheap flour sits on the bottom shelf, where customers have to bend down to find it. The store dictates the walk. Staples like milk and bread go at the back, forcing shoppers past aisles of high-margin items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside in the parking lot, a driver sits in an idling car. A thumb swipes on a screen. The mechanics of the grocery shelf work the same way inside the phone. On Spotify or TikTok, the home screen operates on this logic. There is no search. There is only the pre-sorted feed, loaded and waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The digital slotting fee is the algorithm deciding what loads first. Platforms choose which video, song, or post appears at the top of the feed. This placement is not neutral. It is the result of code written to keep eyes on the glass. The user does not choose what to look at; they choose whether to skip what has already been placed in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This constant exposure shapes what people call personal taste. A user might believe they love a specific indie band or a style of video. In reality, they saw it five times in an hour. Eventually, they stopped skipping. Repetition builds familiarity, and familiarity is easily mistaken for genuine preference. Habit replaces choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blue light of the screen hits the driver&#8217;s face. They tap the top video on the feed. It plays. The screen goes black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital Salvage is an automated system that continues to operate without active human direction.
