We build machines to achieve specific targets, yet we ignore the hidden human habits that these machines sweep away. Consider a historical puzzle from the dawn of department store automation. Why did the installation of high-speed pneumatic mail tubes in 1890s department stores actually increase the physical footsteps of the sales staff?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand this paradox, we must trace the history of workplace automation. During the 1960s, early IBM mainframe batch processing required programmers to submit physical decks of punch cards. Because mainframes processed these cards in batches at scheduled intervals, programmers spent hours waiting in busy punch-card rooms. This slow, clunky process forced programmers to congregate physically. They shared tips, debugged each other&#8217;s logic, and built the first genuine software-engineering communities. Solitude replaces solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern cloud developer environments contrast sharply with those lively punch-card rooms of the mid-century. Modern AI workflow tools replicate this dynamic by eliminating the administrative friction that once forced colleagues to talk to one another. Hyper-optimized pipelines under AI control remove the liminal spaces of the workday\u2014the short walks between desks, the waiting times for server responses, and the manual handoffs of documents. When we automate away the awkward, slow moments of human coordination, we also dismantle the breeding grounds for spontaneous innovation. Friction breeds ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next decade will witness a corporate backlash against seamlessness. Forward-thinking companies will purposely inject synthetic friction into AI workflows to force humans back into messy, productive, and spontaneous collaboration.
