This survival creates a gap between how a system was designed to work and how it actually functions in the dirt and noise of real life. Consider the early days of British rail. A persistent gap exists in the archives of nineteenth-century transit: the specific, unwritten knowledge that railway signalmen carried in their heads but never wrote down in official company rulebooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An answer survives in a heavily annotated ledger from the 1840s. The paper is thick, bound in cracked leather, and heavily stained with coal dust and finger grease. The dirtiest pages are not the ones containing the pristine, printed regulations.
