Inside our Community Garden Project’s Second Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As we enter June and the growing season fully takes root, the community garden and food product development program is flourishing in its second year\u2014marking major progress in our push for northern food security and sustainable agriculture in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Building on the incredible success of last years pilot projects, funded by Manitoba Agriculture<\/strong><\/a> and the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership<\/strong><\/a>, this initiative has moved beyond its successful pilot phase and is now expanding rapidly across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expanding Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While our fall and winter programming is focused almost entirely on participatory and media arts, skills development and capacity building, spring is a different story. As the school year winds down, and we find ourselves outside more, efforts shift towards our living lab and its land-based activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year has brought the addition of more raised garden beds<\/a><\/strong>, improved infrastructure, and an even greater diversity of crops. Thanks to last year\u2019s groundwork, this year’s plants now benefit from healthy, mature root systems, setting the stage for a more abundant harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thriving Crops and Early Garden Successes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Among the first crops planted this spring were leaf lettuce seedlings<\/a><\/strong>, which are now thriving. Dill<\/a><\/strong>, a community favourite introduced last year, has returned stronger than ever. A lush patch of chives<\/a><\/strong> is spreading beautifully, signaling another year of flavorful harvests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northern Berry Production on the Rise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The garden\u2019s berry patches are particularly promising. Our blueberry bushes<\/a><\/strong> are covered in thousands of delicate, bell-shaped blossoms\u2014an early sign of a strong summer crop. In our patches, low-bush wild blueberries<\/a><\/strong> are also starting to flower. Meanwhile, strawberry plants<\/a><\/strong> are bursting with hundreds of blooms, and overwintered raspberry shoots<\/a><\/strong> are thriving in their newly expanded beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With more space and stronger perennials, the team expects a much larger yield than last year\u2019s 25 pounds. This year also welcomes blackberries<\/strong> and Saskatoon bushes<\/a><\/strong>, a native plant rich in both cultural heritage and ecological significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northern Food Systems Innovation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a bold move, the project is growing giant pumpkins<\/a><\/strong> for the first time this year. Bright yellow blossoms are already appearing, building excitement around the potential harvest. This experiment reflects the initiative\u2019s commitment to creativity and innovation in northern gardening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other additions this spring include sage<\/a><\/strong>, peppers<\/strong>, onions<\/strong>, and young apple and cherry trees<\/a><\/strong>. Some apple pippins grown from seed<\/a><\/strong> are displaying deep purple leaves\u2014a striking genetic trait caused by anthocyanins from cross-pollination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These early white blossoms belong to the Saskatoon bush (Amelanchier alnifolia), one of the boreal forest\u2019s most generous and resilient plants. For generations, Saskatoon berries have nourished communities, supported pollinators, and thrived in northern climates. This year, we’re proud to be adding Saskatoon bushes to our food production project\u2014deepening our connection to the land, strengthening local food systems, and honouring traditional knowledge through action.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A Living Model of Sustainable Food Systems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

More than a garden, this is a working model of a sustainable, community-led food system<\/a><\/strong>. It blends regenerative agriculture, food literacy, and cultural connection, offering a hands-on approach to local food resilience<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the season progresses, the project continues to nurture growth, deepen local knowledge, and strengthen northern food systems<\/a><\/strong>\u2014proving that with commitment, creativity, and community, even the coldest climates can bloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
