From Shoots to Sweets: Maximizing Your Raspberry Harvest in Community Grow Boxes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our\u00a0community garden program<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Northwestern Ontario<\/strong>\u00a0is thrilled to enter its second phase, building on the foundation laid last year with support from the\u00a0Manitoba Agriculture Indigenous Food Systems and Agriculture program<\/a><\/strong>, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design<\/a><\/strong>, Global Dignity Canada<\/a><\/strong> and the\u00a0Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership<\/a><\/strong>. This year, with expanded\u00a0growing space<\/strong>\u00a0and established plants in our\u00a0raised garden beds<\/strong>, we are incredibly excited to see the vigorous shoots of our\u00a0fresh raspberry plants<\/strong>\u00a0emerging! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last season yielded a promising 25 pounds, but with the plants maturing and more space dedicated to\u00a0berry farming<\/strong>, we anticipate a significantly larger\u00a0harvest<\/strong>\u00a0this year, boosting our\u00a0local food production<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and enhancing\u00a0food security<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0through\u00a0sustainable agriculture<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing delicious raspberries in a community garden<\/strong> setting requires a little know-how. Here are some tips we’re implementing and lessons learned to help ensure a bountiful yield<\/strong> in your own container gardening<\/strong> or raised bed projects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selecting the Right Spot for Raspberry Cultivation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Raspberries thrive in full sun<\/strong> \u2013 aiming for at least 6-8 hours a day. Good air circulation is also key to prevent diseases.<\/sup>Ensure your raised beds<\/strong> or chosen growing space<\/strong> offer excellent drainage; raspberries dislike wet feet!   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soil Preparation for Sweet Success<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like most berries, raspberries prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter<\/strong>.<\/sup> We amend our community garden<\/strong> soil with compost annually to provide the necessary nutrients for healthy plant growth<\/strong> and abundant fruit.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watering for Juicy Berries<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Consistent moisture is vital, especially during flowering and fruiting.<\/sup> Raspberry plants<\/strong> have shallow roots, so regular watering is more beneficial than infrequent deep soaks.<\/sup> Drip irrigation in raised garden beds<\/strong> is an efficient way to deliver water directly to the roots, conserving this precious resource in our sustainable farming<\/strong> efforts.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pruning for Productivity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pruning is essential for managing raspberry growth and maximizing yield<\/strong>.<\/sup> Knowing whether you have summer-bearing or everbearing varieties determines the best pruning approach. Generally, you remove canes that have already fruited to encourage new, productive growth. Proper pruning also improves air circulation, reducing pest and disease pressure in our organic gardening<\/strong> approach.<\/sup>   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporting Your Growing Raspberry Patch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Raspberry canes can grow quite tall and may need support to prevent them from flopping over.<\/sup> Simple stakes or a trellis system in your raised beds<\/strong> can keep the canes upright, making harvesting easier and improving overall plant health in your urban farming<\/strong> space.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing disease-resistant raspberry varieties<\/strong> suited to Northwestern Ontario agriculture<\/strong> is also a proactive step in our sustainable agriculture<\/strong>program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raspberries are ready to pick when they are fully coloured and detach easily from the core. Gentle handling is key as they are delicate! Regular picking encourages the plant to produce more fruit, extending your harvest<\/strong> season.<\/sup> Enjoy the fruits of your labour \u2013 fresh, locally grown<\/strong> raspberries!   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
