{"id":1766267190114,"date":"2026-09-26T13:16:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-26T18:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artsincubator.ca\/borupscorners\/?p=1766267190114"},"modified":"2026-09-26T19:54:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T00:54:17","slug":"trial-by-fire-engineering-a-sheet-metal-pit-fire-for-wild-clay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsincubator.ca\/borupscorners\/trial-by-fire-engineering-a-sheet-metal-pit-fire-for-wild-clay\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial by Fire: Engineering a Sheet-Metal Pit Fire for Wild Clay"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We built a zero-dollar <\/strong>sheet-metal pit kiln<strong> to push local clay to its absolute limit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With our brand-new firing enclosure officially complete, we&#8217;re standing on the edge of our wildest ceramic experiment yet. The goal: see what raw, local Melgund clay and homemade ash glazes can really do. But instead of digging a basic hole in the dirt that bleeds heat into the open air, we spent the last few days engineering an all-metal, earth-anchored pit kiln using entirely scrap materials we had lying around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The price tag for this entire build? Exactly zero dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rig comes together out of salvaged corrugated steel walls pinned down by sturdy T-posts and heavy metal stakes. To lock in the temperature, we capped the chamber with a scrap corrugated steel lid and weighted it down with massive iron pipes\u2014no plastic, no PVC, and no bought materials. We built in deliberate micro-vents along the base and left a two-inch slot along the top edge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopefully, this setup will act like a bellows, pulling a convection draft through the fuel stack while the reflective steel bounces radiant heat right back into the center of the pit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have a massive pile of free fuel ready to load. Resinous pine splits and dry birch bark will serve as our high-heat accelerants, fast-burning poplar will build up a rapid charcoal bed, and heavy split birch logs will form a dense, long-lasting mountain of white-hot coals. We\u2019ll even toss in gathered branches and dried leaves to throw extra ash and organic flare into the mix. To keep the collapsing logs from crushing our raw Melgund test tiles, we plan to nestle them inside a rigid &#8220;log-cabin&#8221; crib built from thick birch split logs right in the heart of the pit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the fire peaks and the top birch logs break down into glowing embers, we will seal up the exhaust vents to choke off oxygen and (hopefully) trigger a heavy reduction phase. We&#8217;re thinking the iron-rich Melgund clay to flip from bright orange to deep metallic browns, toasted chestnuts, and jet-black smoke halos &#8212; but we don&#8217;t actually know yet! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In any case, we&#8217;re very proud and happy the enclosure is built, the wood is prepped, and a few hypotheses is locked in.
