SUMMARY:The Road Ahead: Building Community-Led AI Futures
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the future of participatory AI\, creative sovereignty\, and resilient digital communities.\nAs artificial intelligence rapidly transforms society\, this workshop asks a critical question: what happens when communities build their own AI futures instead of adopting systems designed elsewhere? Hosted by the Art Borups Corners Living Lab\, this forward-looking session explores emerging possibilities for grassroots AI research\, creative collaboration\, and decentralized cultural infrastructure. \nThis informal and fun session will discuss how AI may reshape arts organizations\, education\, archives\, rural economies\, and participatory research over the coming decade. The workshop also examines the opportunities and risks surrounding automation\, digital dependency\, misinformation\, and extractive technology models — while proposing alternative approaches rooted in openness\, collaboration\, and community stewardship. \nThe session concludes by exploring future directions for the Living Lab itself\, including artist residencies\, open-source creative tools\, youth mentorship initiatives\, and cross-disciplinary research partnerships. Rather than treating northern communities as passive recipients of innovation\, the workshop positions them as active leaders in designing more ethical\, inclusive\, and culturally grounded technological futures. \nFor more information\, contact us at: info@artsincubator.ca

SUMMARY:Northern Innovation 101: What Is AI and What Is a GPT?
DESCRIPTION:An accessible introduction to artificial intelligence\, generative AI\, and creative technology for artists\, educators\, and community organizations.\nHosted by the Art Borups Corners Living Lab\, this introductory workshop explores the foundations of artificial intelligence\, generative AI\, and GPT systems through the lens of northern innovation and community-led research. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how AI technologies work\, why they are transforming creative industries\, and how rural and Indigenous communities can actively participate in shaping the future of digital culture. \nDesigned for artists\, nonprofits\, educators\, youth teams\, and emerging creators\, the session introduces practical AI tools for writing\, brainstorming\, visual development\, research support\, and participatory storytelling. Using real examples from Northwestern Ontario and the Arts Incubator Winnipeg\, the workshop demonstrates how AI can expand creative capacity while supporting cultural resilience\, digital equity\, and local knowledge-sharing. \nThe workshop also explores key conversations surrounding ethical AI\, digital sovereignty\, data ownership\, and community access to technology. Rather than promoting automation for replacement\, the Living Lab focuses on democratizing AI tools so underserved and remote communities can use them to strengthen creativity\, organizational development\, and long-term regional resilience. \nFor more information\, contact us at: info@artsincubator.ca

SUMMARY:What Is AI? Understanding GPTs\, Creativity\, and Community Power
DESCRIPTION:An accessible introduction to artificial intelligence\, large language models\, and how communities can use them creatively and ethically.\nHosted by the Art Borups Corners Living Lab\, this introductory workshop explores what artificial intelligence actually is — beyond the hype\, fear\, and corporate marketing. Participants will learn how systems like GPTs work\, what generative AI can and cannot do\, and why these technologies are rapidly reshaping education\, culture\, media\, and community organizing around the world. \nUsing plain language and real examples from northern and rural arts practice\, the session introduces participants to AI-assisted writing\, image generation\, impact assessments\, research support\, and participatory storytelling. Rather than presenting AI as a replacement for artists or workers\, the workshop focuses on how communities can use these tools to strengthen local knowledge\, cultural expression\, and organizational capacity. \nWe will also learn about outcomes from last year’s research that was supported by the OpenAI Researcher Access Program. \nThe workshop also opens critical conversations around ethics\, bias\, digital sovereignty\, and data ownership — asking who controls AI systems\, whose voices are represented\, and how underserved communities can actively shape the future of technology instead of simply reacting to it. \nFor more information\, contact us at: info@artsincubator.ca

SUMMARY:We The Nuclear Free North Impact Assessment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Your Voice\, Your Land: Take a Stand on the Proposed Nuclear Waste Repository\n\n\n\n\nNorthwestern Ontario has reached a defining moment. Decisions made today will echo for generations\, and your perspective is essential. We The Nuclear Free North invites you to an urgent public workshop to examine the proposal for burying nuclear waste at the Revell site near Dyment.\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the federal government progresses with its review of the Deep Geological Repository (DGR)\, residents of Dyment\, Melgund Township\, Borups Corners\, and neighboring communities have a vital opportunity to shape the outcome.\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Workshop Details\n\n\n\n\nGather with your neighbors to explore the long-term implications of this project and learn how to navigate the complex federal decision-making process.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Date: Saturday\, April 25\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Time: 11:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Location: Dyment Hall (13 Melgund 3A Road)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Cost: Open to the public at no charge\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy Is This Workshop Important?\n\n\n\n\nThe Impact Assessment public comment period is currently open\, but only for a limited time. This workshop provides the tools you need to make an impact. Participants will:\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Demystify the Process: Get a clear breakdown of the federal Impact Assessment phases and how they affect our local environment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Expert Advice: Receive step-by-step instructions on submitting your formal feedback ahead of the May 10 deadline.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Identify Concerns: Collaboratively discuss critical risks\, including water safety\, radioactive transport hazards\, and the long-term ecological health of the region.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Deadline: May 10\n\n\n\n\nFederal authorities are currently finalizing the “rules of engagement”—the guidelines that determine exactly what the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is required to study. This is your chance to ensure that no stone is left unturned regarding the safety of our land and water.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This is a pivotal moment for community involvement. We are setting the scope for the entire assessment right now\, and every voice counts.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind additional resources and details at wethenuclearfreenorth.ca. As proposed\, the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project would provide permanent storage for approximately 5.9 million bundles of used nuclear fuel. The project is expected to span approximately 160 years\, encompassing site preparation\, construction\, operation and closure monitoring. The project assessment is being conducted in collaboration with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
