SUMMARY:We The Nuclear Free North Impact Assessment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Your Voice\, Your Land: Take a Stand on the Proposed Nuclear Waste Repository\n\n\n\n\nNorthwestern Ontario has reached a defining moment. Decisions made today will echo for generations\, and your perspective is essential. We The Nuclear Free North invites you to an urgent public workshop to examine the proposal for burying nuclear waste at the Revell site near Dyment.\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the federal government progresses with its review of the Deep Geological Repository (DGR)\, residents of Dyment\, Melgund Township\, Borups Corners\, and neighboring communities have a vital opportunity to shape the outcome.\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Workshop Details\n\n\n\n\nGather with your neighbors to explore the long-term implications of this project and learn how to navigate the complex federal decision-making process.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Date: Saturday\, April 25\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Time: 11:00 am – 3:00 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Location: Dyment Hall (13 Melgund 3A Road)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Cost: Open to the public at no charge\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy Is This Workshop Important?\n\n\n\n\nThe Impact Assessment public comment period is currently open\, but only for a limited time. This workshop provides the tools you need to make an impact. Participants will:\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Demystify the Process: Get a clear breakdown of the federal Impact Assessment phases and how they affect our local environment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Expert Advice: Receive step-by-step instructions on submitting your formal feedback ahead of the May 10 deadline.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n Identify Concerns: Collaboratively discuss critical risks\, including water safety\, radioactive transport hazards\, and the long-term ecological health of the region.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Deadline: May 10\n\n\n\n\nFederal authorities are currently finalizing the “rules of engagement”—the guidelines that determine exactly what the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is required to study. This is your chance to ensure that no stone is left unturned regarding the safety of our land and water.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This is a pivotal moment for community involvement. We are setting the scope for the entire assessment right now\, and every voice counts.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind additional resources and details at wethenuclearfreenorth.ca. Don’t let this window of opportunity close without sharing your vision for the North.

Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON) and the Township of Ignace have been selected as the host communities for the proposed project\, which is located 21 kilometres southeast of the WLON and 43 kilometres northwest of the Town of Ignace\, Ontario along Highway 17. As proposed\, the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project would provide permanent storage for approximately 5.9 million bundles of used nuclear fuel. The project is expected to span approximately 160 years\, encompassing site preparation\, construction\, operation and closure monitoring. The project assessment is being conducted in collaboration with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

SUMMARY:Design for All: Wordpress\, Canva & Creative Promotion Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve ever wanted to create professional-looking posters but felt intimidated by complicated software\, this is the session for you! As we gear up for our big winter arts exhibition in February\, we need to get the word out—and we want to do it with style. Join us on Saturday\, January 31\, 2026\, for a fast\, fun\, and beginner-friendly workshop where we’ll show you how to turn your ideas into eye-catching promotional materials. \nWe’re revisiting the digital energy from last year’s summer arts program\, but this time with a focus on getting the community through the gallery doors. We’ll be diving into Canva and Poster My Wall\, two incredibly easy-to-use tools that make graphic design feel like play. You don’t need to be an “expert” or have a background in art; these tools are built for everyone\, and we’ll guide you through the process step-by-step. \nWe’ll also continue to learn how to use WordPress for making posts and event listings. This also builds on last summer’s digital skills and storytelling workshops. All skill levels are welcome. \nThis is a “choose your own adventure” style workshop: join us in person with your laptop or hop on from home via our online link. We’ll practice making everything from printed flyers to social media graphics. By the end of the session\, you’ll have the skills to help us promote our upcoming winter exhibit—and maybe even a few tricks for your own personal projects. \nLet’s swap the “how do I do this?” frustration for some creative “aha!” moments. Grab your laptop\, bring your curiosity\, and let’s make sure everyone in the region knows about the amazing art coming our way this February.

SUMMARY:Building Our Future: Winter Exhibition Workshop & Planning Session
DESCRIPTION:Most of our gallery experiences have been fleeting—beautiful\, temporary pop-ups that appear and disappear like the snow. This year\, everything changes. We are finally stepping into a permanent home\, and we want you to help us lay the foundation. Join us on Saturday\, February 24\, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Dyment Recreation Hall for a hands-on session where we transition from “temporary” to “transformed.” \nThis workshop is all about the art of the “build.” We’ll be diving into the creative logistics of planning and staging an exhibition in our brand-new gallery and heritage space. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how we take a raw room and turn it into a professional art environment. From layout design to the physical setup\, we are shaping the permanent skeleton of a space that will serve our community for years to come. \nThis is your chance to get your hands on the project right from the start. We’ll be beginning the actual assembly of this year’s first winter exhibit\, and we need your energy and ideas to make it happen. No prior experience in art or construction is necessary—just a willingness to learn\, collaborate\, and contribute to a local landmark. We’re also looking for long-term volunteers to help keep this new space thriving\, so come find out how you can get involved. \nLet’s spend the morning building something that lasts. Whether you’re interested in the “heavy lifting” of gallery prep or the finer details of curation\, there is a place for you in this new chapter with Melgund Recreation\, Arts and Culture\, the Local Services Board of Melgund and Art Borups Corners. Come on out\, meet your neighbors\, and help us turn this new space into a home for local culture!

SUMMARY:Pop Up Exhibition and Community Consultation
DESCRIPTION:Summer Blooms & Community Roots: A Pop-Up Exhibition and Community Consultation\nShake off the winter chill and join us on Saturday\, January 17\, 2026\, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Dyment Recreation Hall. Presented by Art Borups Corners and Melgund Recreation\, Arts and Culture\, this mid-day gathering blends local botanical beauty with vital community dialogue. We’ll have the hot chocolate ready and light refreshments waiting for everyone who drops by. \nThe hall will be transformed by a vibrant digital exhibition showcasing the hidden floral gems of our region. Using high-resolution screens\, we are featuring a collection of plants and flowers captured during last summer’s arts program. This project\, proudly funded by the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario\, reveals a world of color many of us walk past every day without noticing. It’s a chance to see the local landscape through a new lens and appreciate the intricate biodiversity growing right in our own backyards. \nWhile you take in the art\, we invite you to participate in a critical Community Consultation. We are currently preparing a submission for the Impact Assessment regarding the NWMO Deep Geological Repository for Nuclear Waste Fuel\, due on February 4th. This is an essential space for you to learn more about the project’s details and\, more importantly\, to share your personal perspectives and opinions on its potential impacts. Your voice is a necessary part of this process. \nWhether you are coming for the art\, the advocacy\, or just a warm cup of cocoa\, all are welcome. This event is about celebrating where we live while actively shaping its future. We look forward to seeing you there and hearing what you have to say.

SUMMARY:Saturday Workshop: From Screens to Sawdust
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all spent a lot of time staring at blue light lately\, meeting online to stay warm while the Land Lab is tucked away for the winter. But this week\, we’re breaking the digital routine. It’s time to close the laptop\, put on your boots\, and get your hands dirty. We are opening up the workshop at Art Borups Corners for a special Saturday afternoon session where we’ll trade our keyboards for hammers and reclaimed timber. \nOur mission is to take those silvered\, weathered boards salvaged from old shacks in the bush and give them a second life. These planks have spent decades aging in the elements\, and now we’re going to transform them into the skeleton of our future gallery space. We’ll be experimenting with textures and joinery to build custom display stands and plinths that will house our upcoming winter and spring arts exhibitions. \nThis isn’t just about building furniture; it’s about finding the “wabi-sabi” in the wreckage. Whether you’re a seasoned woodworker or have never picked up a drill (like many of us!)\, this three-hour workshop is all about collaborative experimentation. We’ll figure out how to showcase the natural decay and grain of the wood to create a rustic\, high-end look for our community art space on a zero-dollar material budget. \nTo keep the creative energy flowing\, we’ll have plenty of hot chocolate and snacks to keep us warm while we work. This is a rare chance to connect in person during the off-season and leave with a tangible contribution to our gallery’s infrastructure. Swap the screen for the woodshop and help us turn forest history into art history!

SUMMARY:Saturday ISBN Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This weekend we’ll be working alongside partners in Nunavut and Northwestern Ontario to dive into the world of ISBNs! 🔖📖 \nTogether\, we’ll explore how the Library and Archives Canada system works for registering International Standard Book Numbers—the identifiers that make sure books can be tracked\, recognized\, and circulated in the global publishing network. \nLearning this process is an important step in preparing for our upcoming storytelling and oral history initiatives. It ensures that community-created works are formally registered and accessible\, building pathways for our voices to reach far beyond local borders. \nThe session also ties into our broader creative enterprise program\, which is focused on equipping artists with practical publishing skills. By building this capacity\, artists can document their work\, take ownership of their stories\, and develop new opportunities in the arts economy.
